Re: My 223, 260, and 22lr
Am I right that when shooting downhill the projectile is likely to strike high? I have been shooting downhill on a steep property and have been hitting with a dead on hold at estimated 300m and one lucky shot aiming about 6 inch high at an estimated 400m.
Last time we went down to the flat valley floor and shot at gongs at a known 300yds. So aiming straight on I missed. I was surprised at how high I aimed to get a hit and these rabbits I was hitting dead on were as clear in the sight picture as the gongs.
Either shooting down hill gives more height or our range guesstimation is pathetic!

Yes Trev, either shooting up hill or down hill will put your projectile higher, at point of impact, above the line of sight. I don't know the ins and outs of why, it is what I have read and been told many times, it certainly works out that way in the field.

I thought up hill brought it low and dowh hill high, but thought I'd ask as I am Irish and prone to foolishness

I thought the same mate, and still don't know why it is. Some of the blokes on here that are into the technical side of stuff like that might be able to enlighten us.

Trev, shooting up or downhill at say 141.42 m on a 45 degree slope, you are really only shooting at 100 m on flat ground. Gravity only affects the horizontal distance, not the overall distance.

Now there is a clever way to get a free plug for some business or a dumb way of letting your boss know you are on a forum when you should be working

That's a suppliers notepad. If I was plugging the boss it would look like this.

Yeah Glenn, its not a bad rabbit, maybe I could get him to do the artwork for some logos on my work shirts, or the side of the ute. Thanks for the quick reply on the trajectory stuff Glen, now its a clear as mud.

Perfect explanation! Even I get it

I trust I'm not the only one who feels so stupid for needing that diagram for this to make perfect sense now
Actually now I'm confusing myself again. Should it be flight time that drop is attributed too. IE longer in the air more time for gravity to do its thing?

Gravity is helping it going down hill and negates hang time. Up hill tho...............GriMo wrote:I trust I'm not the only one who feels so stupid for needing that diagram for this to make perfect sense now

When you shoot a bow at those angles you will realise that what Kickinback is saying rings true.

Exactly! I have had a shot @ 40m flight distance and used my 30m pin, ..... Spot on! (this was helped my my angle compensating rangefinder though)Ol 55 wrote:When you shoot a bow at those angles you will realise that what Kickinback is saying rings true.
