I know, you're right but it is just a play thing and part of its appeal will be the wank factor!

Yep velocity aint everything. Im running 140 hybrids in one of these http://6mmar.com/260_Imp_30_.php and keeping it at 2835fps. Accuracy and awesome (basically no) vertical spread is very important for shooting long range.

JEEZUS haha with great power comes a great amounts of powder I guess!
Yep, and a fairly short barrel life. We all say barrels are a consumable, but I don't recall many 264 Win Mags poking their heads up on this forum.

The rule of thumb is that an accurate 300 Win Mag will be shot out under 1500 rounds.

The 300 RUM will be lucky to last 1000 rounds of gong ponging fun at 800m. Still better than the 7mm RUM, it is usually insufficiently accurate at less than 700 rounds.

Seriously, go with a 300 Win or a 7mm Rem in a 700 Sendero or similar (Savage do some nice stuff here and barrels are easy to change). Both are damn good cartridges and you will practice with them. Long story short, I have seen plenty of fellows try the long range thing with those large cartridges and whilst the trajectory is flat, long range hits come from practice, practice and more practice. If you are not putting rounds downrange every week in real conditions you can't hope to have the skills needed when it counts. Normal folks don't practice much with something that gets 800 rounds and then a new barrel, because even though they are 'consumable' they are a $700 consumable part and few of us working stiffs can afford three barrels every two years.

For this reason a Savage F Class rifle in 6mm BR would be the best way to go, or a Ruger 77 VT/Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor. To be capable at this work you really are going to need to handload.

Now if you only want it for fun and giggles once or twice a year, go the RUM!
I will be hand loading, I am leaning toward the 300wm. And doing this on a budget the Rem SPS long range seems a good place to start, I'll put a brake on it and eventually get a Timney trigger for it and new stock and I guess turn it custom over time with the barrel being changed when it starts to wear out.

Keith, my sons and I all rang the 707yd gong with my T3 varmint in 260. This gun is straight off the shelf. I haven't even adjusted the trigger. Pulled the Vortex off the 22/250. The only reason for hand loads was factory ammo was unavailable. I'm pretty much repeating what BB said earlier here. Load info was from on here.

Personally (and this will happen before Yass next year as a gong buster) I will be going for another 7mm Rem Mag, Tikka Varmint of course, with a brake to ease the shoulder ache after 100 rounds.

You should be pretty pleased with this forum mate.

What do you guys think of the 300WSM in a TIkka Varmint with Brake? Do you guys think that will be a decent option?

Oh yes.

Back it up with a nice set of dies and top it off with a worthy scope and you will be set.

A friend of mine has a Model 70 Stealth converted from 308 to 300 WSM. The thing is a tackholer and with the Holland Brake on board it does not kick (it does slap you in the face every time though).

Ok next decision:
EGW 20MOA Rail would be a given right?

What scope, thinking around the $5-800 mark for a scope?

Scope.. Vortex PST... OR... fork out a little more and get one of the new Sightron S3's. 6-24, mil hash reticle, FFP, and in milradian!

Shoot 190 Noslers out of the 300WSM. They are cheap and fly well, but shit on game!

I've got one of them but the fluted hunter version. She kicks a bit as my youngest found out on Saturday with his eyebrow getting a touch up.

EGW rails are ok, but if you want repeatability I personally recommend Farrel bases.

The Vortex scopes are damn good too.

This is a great opportunity for you to influence your bosses and get them signed up as the non-USA distributor for the SWFA SS scopes. These scopes are made in Japan, have a very reasonable price and solid construction.

SWFA won't sell outside of the USA due to the damage they were taking from Credit Card fraud, but I reckon if you asked nicely at the Shot Show in January they might just be convinced to sell direct to the Abelas chain. Check the scopes out here...http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-Scopes-C1719.aspx

This one would be perfect for your use in the field. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-15x42-Tactica ... 62238.aspx

Failing that, it is hard to go past a Sightron S3, but they are a bit more than your $800 limit.

I am waiting eagerly for their new S3 Tactical 2.5-17x56. Just the thing for my heavy varmiter.

I am going to buck a trend here - why would you go with the WSM over the 300WM if you are going with a long action rifle?

Everything else about the plan sounds good, especially with the growing number of trick parts available for the T3.
