That's what the should have done in the first place Keith, 20cal. Instead of trying to horn in the 17HH, big stuff in my opinion. Those that have the old rem 5mm Mag love it, for a company to come out and make new ammo for that rifle there has to be a demand. I have'nt seen the Aguilla ammo in Aus, but I don't get out much to stores these days. When I was in N.Z. it was available at around $30.00 NZD a box.
Someone here or AHN picked a an absolute ripper in great condition. Missed or Steve99 I think.
The action on the rem would handle the presure of the new 17 WSM, it was said to be the strongest rimfire action ever made.
Another that may cause it to fall over in US me thinks, I reckon Hornady 17HH will come down in price once the rifles start hitting the shop in big numbers. Golly if ruger could sort the stupid two part bolt, get the accuracy as consistant as CZ, what a cracker little rifle that would be with the rotory 8 shot magazine

I think you are looking at them too similar, it is like the 22 hornet and 22-250 you can't compare them they both have very popular followings.
I think it is too simple to say the 17HH will be a success and the 17WSM wont as they are competing. They are not, one is centrefire, one is a rimfire and they are two very different markets, especially in the US.
Lets be honest, it doesn't matter what the hell happens in Australia. The cartridge's success will be decided in the US and the US only.
The Savage Bmag also has a rotary mag.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the 17hh or that the wsm will outsell it. I think they will exist alongside each other. With that said, 17 cal centrefires have never been as popular as their 22cal counterparts. The only reason why they were popular over here was with fox shooters in the 70's and 80's.
In my experience 17 cals are a bitch to reload and that is the reason why I ordered a WSM and not a 17 hornet.

Then we agree to disagree. What is important is that any new offering on the firearms market, is good. I guess its a little pointless debating the cartridges points until we see it, and some tets done.
But it still should have been 20cal

It is an interesting cartridge and offers more than say the hmr over the 22wmr. If it is similar priced to a 17hmr then should do well. We all see how well the 17hmr is on foxes (thanks Fenring) and it will just extend the 17's reach. Someone who doesn't hand load nor shoots thousands of rounds a year will be sure to look at it.

I think you forget how long it takes for a new cartridge to become widely available.johno1 wrote:Just saw a post on saubier, one of the bigger stores is expecting the savage rifle by the end of the month.

The 17HH was announce at SHOT SHOW 2012 (January) and it was in late 2012 that we started to see ammo and firearms available here and that was only a small shipment.
Even now you would be very lucky to walk into a shop and buy one off the shelf.
It will be 2 or 3 years before the 17HH is widely and easily available. (that is walk into a gun shop buy the rifle and ammo and walk out without having a backorder and waiting months)
It was the same for the 17hmr and the same for the 204 and nearly any other cartridge I can remember for recent years.

I know,
I just found this out myself. Damn those 17 Hornets look alright aye? HAHA.
I'm thinking long and hard about the 17 Hornet. Had a look at a Walking Varmint we have here. It is nice for a synthetic gun EXCEPT it has a lot of stock flex. I don't care if it shoots though.

A few things are still going thru my mind about the 17HH.kjd wrote:I know,

The savage stock is but ugly. Only holds 4 rounds with no upgrades available. Small projectiles make it fiddly to reload. Uses next to no powder tho.
The timber laminate model is nice but buy the time you drop 1k on it you might just get a T3 hunter in 223 or 204 for the same money.
Im already setup to reload my T3 varmint 223 do I just use that and not bother with the whole 17cal.
I could just learn the trajectory of the 223 and run 65g Sierra SPBT and do it all.
Do I just buy a T3 lite 204 and blow the crap out of everything.
They beauty of the 17wsm was cheap ammo, sub $500 gun and 8 round mag.

This is just some of the madness going thru my head at the moment.

I just want my 17WSM before the hype train runs out for it
