Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
I think 22lr, because its so fun and cheap to shoot, is quite often my number one going for a walk calibre choice. Its not noisy (subs) you can get ammo anywhere. Most have their first memory of shooting guns with them, and spend the rest of thier lives with a 22. In turn they get to teach thier kids and thier grandkids how to shoot with one.
Sure I love my centrefire BRX and my higher power rimfire 17HMR, but the 22 is always such a laid back option to take when its shooting time and i really enjoy shooting it.

Would have to agree with gunnie the .17 Ackley Hornet I had a early model Brno twin triggers stainless steel barrel with 8X Tasco scope. Amazing accuracy very fatal on rabbits out to 250m used 10 grains of powder no recoil pleasure to shoot, my mate now owns the rifle so I still get to see it occasionally. I just bought a Remington Model 5 .17 HMR have not fired it in anger yet but reckon with some tweaking will be great.

im with pat on this one, 6.55x55.
It can be loaded for anything on this island, anchores game with n o fuss, is a accurate round and pleasant to shoot.
otherwise it might go to the 338win mag, as i like tthe way it wrecks things

That is a lovely rifle Gunnie, turning slightly green here.
Hard to answer the question and make sense. I would have to say that my favourite calibre is not the one I use the most - because by far my most used rifle is my Marlin 336SS in .30/30 - because it is perfect for the shooting I do most - but that is the gun, not the calibre.
7mm Rem Mag is probably the calibre I think has the best attributes as an all rounder for Australia, and I enjoy shooting it - mild recoil, shoots flat, hits hard, great range of projectiles available and will take just about any game available in Aus from little deer to scrub bulls.

The original varmint king , .220 Swift for those unfamiliar with the term . Over 70 years old and still right up with the best of them in terms of varmint cartridges . My first centrefire , its capabilities were a real revelation . A modern classic like the .30/06 and .270 .
Nice Martini Gunnie .

I think I would choose my 30.06, very versatile calibre.

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
i would say the .22.. might change after i get my full license!
reason for the .22 being my favourite is that it that it is just alot of fun.. i remember first learning with it and it was soo much fun ... over the years we have gone though countless bricks of ammo for shit all cost. you can sit and crush cans the fun and easy way with a .22 hp all day and never get bored... its only a small bullet but then only being so small and having limited power and range it makes you think about the shot you are taking! al in all great bullet!

222 Rem
1. Forgiving - Both on load variation and "user error"
2. Mild report and virtually no recoil
3. I have one...

I would have to agree with Brad Y and Andrewbron, Although the .22LR lacks power and range it would have to be the most commonly used an fun cartridge out there. EVERYBODY learns to shoot with a .22LR. They come in loads of different weights and charges, you can shot 1000's of rounds and not get a sore shoulder, .22 rifles require less cleaning so you can spend more time shooting. They're nice n quiet and the rifles are usually lightweight making them easy to carry always a big plus when hunting.....
Although not a satisfying as dropping a big red at 300M, the .22LR is loads of fun shooting cans/paper/bunnies!!!
.22LR definately

For me it's the 22 Hornet - my 1st centrefire, introduced me to reloading, got my 1st fox, and got the "red mince" happening with the bunnies. Not quite enough oomph for red mist. Liked it a bit more after getting it K'd

The .223 a fun round.
Does big or little game, all day, everyday.
Nice on the shoulder.
And the whole family can play.

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
222.. its definitly my favourite cause of accuracy, its real cheap to run, its good on barrels and i think it is still very underated when it comes to killing power. i once whacked a billy at 600 and it dropped and didnt move an inch, yeah a bit of a fluke but hey it was dead before it hit the ground. i currently use it to harvest roos at night , well 90% anyway.i wish more companys still chambered rifles in this fantastic little cartridge.
