Re: Pick 5 centrefires....well 4..
just to throw my hat in the ring, in addition to the 204 which will do fine for rabbits through to dogs.
I dont know if your 204 is built to be a dedicated spotlighting rig or is set up as a sporter but assuming it is set up as a spotlighting rig (read med to heavy varmint) I would also look at a walk around 20cal or 22 cal, either another 204 or a 222 or 223. Cant really look past a sako or a tikka for sporters in these calibres. If its not a spotlighting rig then obviously a dedicated spotlight rifle is a must.
A light weight mid range calibre for climbing the hills looking for goats, again Tikka comes to mind and calibres would include 243 & 7mm-08 in short action and 6.5-55 Swede and the 25-06 in long action.
A Marlin lever action in 30/30 for close scrub pigs and fun
A 30-06 for everything else (Buff buster summed this cal up). Again the Tikka T3 Hunter is nice and light and value for money.
Though its not a centrefire I would also include a 22LR, 22WMR or 17HMR for target practice, hunting in more populated areas and because nothing improves a shooters skill more than shooting.
To be fair there is a lot of overlap in all of these calibres. If money was tight I would have a spotlighting rig and a 30-06, if it wasnt I would have as many as I could

Re: Pick 5 centrefires....well 4..
My choice to fill the old 5 gun safe would be:
1) 22LR
2) .223
3) .270
4) 30-30
5) 12G (22" Lever Action)
I'v got 3 of them, hopefully get the last two this year
Cheers,
Dean

243 win
270 win
a lever gun in 30/30 , 44 mag ( i like 454 casull in the rossi or marlin 45/70 ) as fun gun or close - medium range pig-goat .
375 h&h
& a over under 12g or 20g .
i changed the 22 250 to 243 because it does it all .
2nd guess would be
22lr or 22 mag
243 varmint rifle
270 win or 308 win light to medium weight hunting rifle
12g or 20g over under
300 win mag , 338 win mag , 375 h&h , 458 win if the need be

Well for me
a 20cal either a .20 prac of 20PPC
.223 for those small to medium things.
.260 Rem for goats at a bit of range and to be different
And a bush gun either lever or pump action in 30-30 or .44mag or similar

Re: Pick 5 centrefires....well 4..
Thanks for the responses gang.
The next one is on lay-by.......drum roll.......Remington SPS synthetic/stainless in 22-250.
This will be added 2 the 2 x 22lr (CZ classics) and the 204, we currently have.
To paraphrase Roy Scheider in Jaws..."I think we're going to need a bigger safe".

Mmmmmmmmmmm a .243
As I got a Ruger firearm for my .204 and a Remington firearm for the .22-250 (coincidence!) I guess I'll have to look at Winchester if the next one's going to be a .243 !

Re: Pick 5 centrefires....well 4..
Easy one..
22lr- small game
223- varminting
308- bigger varmints
12g U/O shotgun
For most shooters, this will get the job done for near every situation. This is now what I am striving for. Common sense! 308W will drop near everything in Oz... drops Samber no problem.
A little further....
22lr, sako quad. lilja drop in barrel.. Vortex 4-16X50 PST scope
223, rem700, aftermarket trigger, custom barrel, Zeiss 6-24X56 Diavari
308, rem700, after market trigger, custom barrel, heavy taper 20" long, new March 3-24X42 ffp, A3 stock
12gauge.. Beretta 682...
