How much experience have you had with a centrefire? If you are just getting into shooting I don't think a 308 is right for you.

If you want something that can take a good range of game and has readily available factory ammo I have to say don't go larger than a 243 or you will have trouble shooting accurately, you could develop a flinch or close your eyes before you shoot because of the recoil.

Whilst the 308 would make a great 2nd gun I can't imagine recommending one as a newbie's first centrefire.

I'd be more inclined to recommend a 204, 223, 22-250 etc to you and tell you to have one of them and get a 308 when you are confident at shooting it. Just food for thought.

My wife shoots the 25-06 and she is recoil sensitive. I would rate it low in a T3, the stock and kick pad work well and with good hearing protection he won't know its gone off. For the game Bruce mentioned the 25 cal will be ideal or he could go 270 for a first Game rifle, they all jump about the same. Then again I may not be the best person to talk to, The first CF I used was a 303 and the first i bought was a 375 and the next a 300. Doing lots of plinking gets rid of bad habits so practice your skills with the .22.

No worries mate. I was just afraid if you were new to shooting that something a bit bigger wouldn't be as fun first up.

Don't worry about muzzle blast scaring game - the bloody critter will be dead before the noise of the shot gets there!!

Excellent choice mate ... I have behaved and stayed out of this but now you have decided I will say that I agree entirely with HiWall the 25.06 makes the 308 look pedestrian. Muzzle blast is not a real issue at all, thats what hearing protection is for anyway.

I am absolutely amazed that nobody has snapped that rifle up...IMO that is close to the perfect gun for allround Aussie game AND varmuts!

Only in Victoria. In NSW there is no silly artificial limit dreamt up around cartridges available from 40+ years ago.

A strongly constructed 25 cal bullet (like a 115gn Barnes TSX, Nosler ETip or 120gn Swift A Frame) will be up to the job without too much problem.

I reckon you need a minimum recommendation for larger game animals but it shouldn't be by calibre but by muzzle energy. That makes a heap more sense!

Since a handloaded 25.06 is right on the heels of a 270 then yes mate I would. I have shot deer with that rifle I have for sale just not samber.
The 25.06 is more than enough gun for deer and is very popular in the USA for deer.

Ahh yes but we are talking Govt regulations here are we not? Cannot remember a keen hunter in any of our current state of fed Govt. They would hand this off to an "expert panel" with some shooters, some animal lovers, some scientists and some vets. The only people who would be actually in the know would be the shooters and the rest would be influenced by the animal lovers. So My guess is the shooter would have reccomended something smaller and the rest would say they need something bigger. I suppose you have to allow for a new shooter that will not be so accurate but I also susect that they would be also thinking a bigger gun is also louder and therefore scare off everything else in the area and therefor "save" some those cute little bamby in the bush.

I have never shot a deer and will most likley never do so as we don't get them on the farms where I shoot but I have seen govt regs in action. Usually the group who will actually be involved in the activity is not the major decision maker.
