Cheers Macca,

Potential indeed, of course it's got to be converted into results...I'm working on it :D

I reach the Lands @ 2.8440, I'm currently loaded @ 2.8220 for a .02 jump, I can jam and still mag feed and I'm thinking that is the way to go. What do you reckon?

Cheers,
Rath

Hi Rath,
Seating out and feeding from the mag is the usual problem most encounter.I would go to .01 first and then try just kissing the lands.
If you jam hard in without crimping you may have extraction(of a live round) issues in the field or a tac comp(the other point is when trying to jam hard in we are really only reseating the projectile deeper in the case as once you have engaged the lands that's pretty much as far in as you can go).
Each rifle is different but very few of mine like a jump in the target projectiles.(Sierria MK's can be an exception ).
Gotta love load developement.
cheers,
Macca

I want a 10-42x80 SN-9 for my project. Don't know how likely I am to get it sent out of the US though. Never hurts to ask I guess.

G'day Rath,

Out of curiosity (I'm very impressed with your muzzle break) is that a threaded variant and how much did Shane charge you for that?

All of a sudden, I think I need a 'tactical' gun. Everyone should have at least one I reckon. Very nice.

A question on seating depth for the tech heads:

1. If I jamb a projectile into the lands or just kiss the lands, will the pressure be higher (for same load) than if I loaded 20 - 30 thou off???
2. In the two cases above, will velocity be the same? Which one will be faster, if any? Keep in mind 'same load'.

More questions to follow once I get answers on the two above!

Sean,

The Brake is threaded and there is a cross bolt to secure it once it is in the correct position. The good thing about the Badger FTE us that it is not a timed brake in that you can remove and replace it without POI shift (I'm going to verify this). I have no idea what Shane charged me for it fitted, I told him I wanted it and it was included in the final bill. I should add that the brake is VERY effective, not needed on a .308 but nice to be able to spot ones shots. Bore sighting the bbl yesterday I could spot my impact at 50M, essentially there was no recoil on all but the hottest loads.

wb240, you'll have to come out and have a fondle and shoot of it at the range.

To your question, generaly speaking loading the projectile further into the case (or away from the lands) will increase pressure and therfore velocity. However jamming into the lands can also increase pressure :D. As to which will lead to the most pressure, I'll let one of the Gurus chime in

Cheers,
Rath

Very nice rifle, well done.

FWIW I believe pressure increases with the same charge the further into the lands you seat the pill.

1. I imagine pressure would be higher initially, in my head I can’t think of a better analogy then if you’re shutting a car door. If it has a bit of swing it closes easy as it has momentum behind it. If it’s already almost closed and needs that last little bit to catch it seems to need more force. Ultimately I guess what im trying to say is if it’s off the lands, it’s only overcoming neck tension and inertia to start moving, if it’s in the land it has that, plus the additional drag of being pushed into the barrel. Of course, I may have cocked that up.
2. No Idea, I will say the one seated on the lands due to the increased pressure, but really have nfi.

In my opinion a cartridge with the projectile seated into the lands will have higher pressure.

Isn`t this why Roy Wheatherby`s rifles have long throats so the projectile has some momentum when it enters the constriction of the rifleing.I also believe this is why so many factory rifles have short magazine/long throats

I have used a chronograph for my .308 loads in my tikka. Seating into the lands produced less velocity than a .01 jump. I can only assume that the drop in velocity was as a result of a drop in pressure. I will add that my charge weight probably affected this finding since it was a compressed load.
