Just read your article on the 6mm Rem, is that a long or short action?

G,day Mullet
Its a short action, which makes it a bit of a mongrel if you want to load close to the lands as the cartridge overall length is usually too long to fit in the magizine. :(
Cheers jethro

Thanks, mate, btw the idea of loading to the lands is irelevant in a hunting rifle, they shoot just fine jumping and you dont have trouble with pressure spikes.
6 mm rocks.

Mullet (or anyone else...)

I'm currently doing some load testing in my 20 Practical and am loading the proj's 3 thou off the lands. Am finding that I am getting overpressure MUCH lower in the powder range than other rifles and where I thought I would.

So, question is, how much would I need to back off from the lands to avoid the pressure problem. 20 thou? 40 thou?

Oh yea, and where is this article on the 6mm from Jethro?

Cheers

What are the pressure signs that you are seeing?
Are you cronographing your loads?
I cant find the article now either.

Its a remmy 700 and am finding the extracting part of the bolt lift very hard to lift, so to speak... I sort of have to pull the bolt up quickly and quite roughly to get it to extract.

Also seeing very flat Federal primers - I know they're a bit soft but these are very flat!

No - not chronographing them.

Cheers

Time to back off, and buy a chrony.
Remember most of what you read on the internet is only hearsay, your rifle is not a 220 Swift, dont expect it to perform like one.

using ADI BM1. Was getting pressure signs at 22.5grains. I think the current 'accurate' load was about 21.8grains. Behind a 40grain V-max.

Another bloke using 2206H was getting around the 3800 fps. Not a 220 swift but not far away either! With the 32 grain V-max we should be able to get around 4200fps.

Mullet & WB243
When I said I go chasing the lands I didnt mean I seat on (or into) the lands I just like to get within 15thou of them. Sorry if I created any confusion :? . I havent had much if any pressure signs when loading for the 6mmrem this way. As I said in the article, Im currently working on a load using 90grn scenars. These bullets seem to have a very long ogive and need to be loaded long to get near the lands. The initial pressure work up showed a couple of good groups of .7inch at 150metres. Good for this rifle anyway. If I can stop the flyer every 4th or 5th shot ruining the group I may be on a winner. Heres hoping :)
The article in question is not an article as such, just my answers to the questions KJD posted in the varmint rifles profile section. at http://ausvarmint.com/av/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=28
WB, not that Im any expert at reloading the sub 224 cals but it would seem that pressures spike very easily with these. Id drop back your loads 1.5grns, load off the lands at least 15thou, and then heed the advice of sabier.com and increase in .2grn increments. once you get close to the velocity you want with no pressure signs then close in on the lands with your bullet seating.
cheers Jethro

Mate 22.5 gn of BM1 is about what you would use in a 204 so i am not suprised you are getting pressure.

You have to get a chronograph. A load you may think is mild may be screaming or maybe not but you wont know until you can check the speed.

Will be interesting to see what speed you are getting with 21.8gns.

I recomend most varmint style rifles to seat about 20 thou off the lands but some experimenting will show whats best for each rifle.
cheers,
Shane
