opinion on action

Post by trevort »

It looks like I will soon be the owner of a sporter weight 20 cal barrel.

As I have a few heavy rifles a carry rifle in 2o practical is currently my preferred option.

I have been offered a Sako vixen L461 as the action donor. Rifle looks old but action is smooth.

Alternative is Rem stainless short action bought new.

The rifle will likely have a Boyds ross thumbhole stock.

I reckon the blued action stainless barrel combo doesnt look the best so the question is do I give up anything by choosing a trued rem sa over a sako?

Hey Trevort,
The Remington action would be a bit heavier than the Sako would'nt it? Why not stay with the L461 you have already and make up a nice handy little walkabout, and just Dura-coat or something simillar the action/barrel (cuz i agree on the asthetics of blue/stainless).
Im biased cuz i love the old Sakos
Cheers

Trevort,
I have a blued Sako S491 with a SS barrel topped off with a Weaver Silver scope and I think it looks great. Not to mention Cooper rifles, they come from the factory with blued actions and SS barrels. Then same as Detritus, I am biased.

Please don't stick a stainless barrel on a blue Sako - that would be almost a criminal offence. Here is my little Sako L46 .222 Rem, it just wouldn't be the same with an ugly shiny pipe on it....

I suppose your right there Bushchook  , I had in my mind that the action was a bit rough. Trevort actually said the "rifle" was a bit rough now that i look at it. Oh well, keen to see what path he takes anyhow

Cheers,
Detritus.

Ok, looks like I will have to talk turkey with the owner of the Sako action. No I'm not that lucky to have both, its which one to buy! Wont be talking much about this project for a while as $$ will be slow so it will take some time!

The rifle wasnt what you would call rough, just old.
