Stirling model 1400TS write up
Stirling model 1400TS write up
Hi guys, just thought I would post a little info and pix on this model stirling for those that may be interested in a budget heavy barrel RF varmint rifle. After seeing this particular model on the "Armscor" website (thats the mob that make them) recently my brother took a punt and ordered one through our LGS without being able to see one in the flesh. For the 269 bux it cost it seems his punt paid off with what seems to be a pretty reasonable rifle. A mate was so impressed with my brothers when seeing it he ordered one for himself the next day as well. Its my mates rifle you see in the pix below. As you can see it wears a pretty decent looking piece of timber too.
It seems armscor currently make 7 different models of rifle in 22 LR. 6 of them are made on the model 1400 action with only the model 14P being made on the model 14 action that everyone is familiar with when you start talking stirling bolt actions. There is considerable difference between these 2 actions as you'll see in the pix below. The only real gripe I have so far with these rifles is the trigger. Regardless of model they all seem to use the same triggers. While not totally unworkable they are a bit harder to tune than some others. That said though after some work my brothers has a crisp 1.1lb release and my mates has the same crisp pull with a weight of just under 2 lbs (which is where he wants it for silhouette at this stage).
Other than the trigger the only other thing that needed doing was some light sanding in the barrel channel to relieve any contact between the two.
I'm not going to pretend that this rifle is some kind of shit hot target rig but compared to some of the heavy barrel stuff they want 600 plus bux for I personally think they are very comparable. As for accuracy I'm more than happy with my brothers and my mates is showing some great potential as well considering we have only tried a few kinds of ammo so far. One of my brothers targets was shown in another thread.
As for the actions I'll let the pix do most of the talking but for a comparison I got hold of a model 14p so you can see what the differences are for yourself. The model 1400 uses 2 screws at either end of the action to secure it into the stock not the single barrel lug of the 14p. The action itself is over 4mm wider in dia as well with thicker side walls. Theres no pix of these but the bolts are very different as too, though they have the usual RF bolt handle lock up.
With scope these rifles weight over the 8lb mark making them pretty steady for offhand silhouette shooting. For those that may need it they also come with a 1/2 unf thread on the end the barrel for a weight or what ever else you can think of. The parkerised finish seems to be up to some punishment as well.
So there you go a little info for people in this end of the market that may be finding it hard to get a look at some of the less common rifles that are available.

Heres a couple of pix of the 2 different actions.

I've got one of those chinese brno's myself. I'm not sure if its a typical example but even though it has 2 screws securing it in the stock one of them is in a lug on the barrel. Can't say if it hinders accuracy but I'd prefer it in the action like the above stirling. Apart from that the stirling does feel like a different class of rifle, definately a better thing. Shoots better too.
On the 6.5 HFS barrel rooter subject I'm onto a cheap 2nd hand 28 inch 6.5 barrel that might just be good enough to experiment with. Proly not long enough but beggers can't be choosers. I'm sure the greenies will appreciate me recycling it and returning it to nature anyway (from the inside out). Apparently with these things you need to set your chrony up 40 feet away too, that way the molten barrel material has time to fall to the ground and not fuxore the face of it beyond repair!

Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
That is a pretty nice looking bit of wood on that Stirling, and I must admit that the action looks a lot better than the old one. I had a .22WMR model14?1400, with the right ammo it would shoot very well but it had ignition problems that I could not live with.
That was a good read Rum, and I saw the pic's of the groups its shot on another thread. Thats the sort of write up I like relitively short but to the point. Good stuff.

Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
Is the trrigger mechanism the same on both stirlings? I'm after one for my old stirling the same as the one in the pics, might be able to pick up a new replacment off a later model if it is.

Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
From what I can gather the triggers are the same on all their 22 LR rifles. The model 14 is still being produced so there shouldn't be a problem getting a new trigger. The 1400 is being made along side it. The 22 WMR version is different again and is the model 1500.

Did a good job on those photos Rumbo, thats my 2nd stirling with great timber now. Only if my 14p would shoot as well as my 1400ts.

Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
Finally got round to bedding the 1400 and headed down the range. To say i was happy with my new 369 buck rig (rifle and scope) was an understatement! We ran 8 brands of ammo through it on the day at 50yrds and found that PMX Toad Loads, PMX Bunny Galore Bunny No More and Winchester Rabbit Ammo performed the best.
The 6-24x56 ZOS Target Scope performed really well too, not bad for $100 shipped. 300 Rum warned me that mentioning this brand of optics may get me some flack from certain members who believe dear is always best.......SO........before any start flapping their yap, I own 3 of this brand of scope now. The above obviously, a 3-12x56 on my 6.5 and a 10-40x60 on my 220 swift. All of which have bounced around in trucks and seen a heap of use still keeping zero and still crystal clear. And all under the 200 buck mark. Anyhow at the end of the day we were glad to ring up a mate of ours to inform him he can still keep his heavy barrel Sako and Lupy scope (they nicknamed em Lupy's cause you'd have to be to pay that much money for one) cause we got another accurate 1400 TS on our hands...........He hung up.
All the best guys,
Pig Sausages.

Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
look i own few chepes too work on my 3006 but difference not only in price .when u look thru one of those exotic optics ull want one mait youll change u mind!!
Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
Yeah looked through a few $700 plus scopes. These "cheapies" may not have that optic quality but ain't bloody bad for 100 bucks and just as reliable. At least $600 saving to buy reloading gear etc......even enough for a rifle to put it on! Hey you can blow the cash if ya got it, why not. Or ya can be effective and see just as well on a budget. Never seen the point of spotting a flea on a rabbit, just its head will do me.
Re: Stirling model 1400TS write up
Im very interested in one of these 1400TS.
Highland sports stocks them, and are listing two versions. One is a single shot bolt action, and one is a 10 round bolt action. The 10 round is actually listed as the 1400TS10. the single shot is the 1400 TS. The armscor website doesn't seem to mention this.
