Choices
Fellas, Seeing as my .223 has gone to a new home, i have been thinking on what could fill the void in my safe....
i have 2 cals in mind but cant decide... 22-250 or .204r.... it will be in a Tikka T3(not sure what model yet) it will be for foxes, cats, rabbits, hares, and crows and it will be my target rifle shooting feild rifle, could be shooting out to 400m if i do my bit...
im also stuck on a rimfire, i have been too caught up in centrefire to worry about this one till now but 22lr,22WMR or 17HMR this one will be my general walk around our small farm rifle, sometimes shooting out just past 100m, for the usual small stuff, and my wifes starter rifle.
what would you go for and why??
Cheers BB

G'Day BB,
I'd go with the 204. I dont own one but do a search and you will see plenty of people here who vouch for it, cheaper than a 22-250 to load for too with around the same trajectory as the 250 and more importantly it allows you to see you bullet strike and doesn't rear up as much as the 250.
Just ask TrevorT!

Re: Choices
depends if you like to see the action. I love my 6/250, its an emphatic killer so I wont run down the 22/250 but for small stuff go the 204. In a varmint weight rifle with your variable scope set at mid range you see the action. With my 6/250 (which recoils more than a 22/250 BTW) I just see the odd bit flying the other way but miss the main action!
I chose a 17hmr for a rimfire, like the extra range.

Don't forget the 17 Mach2 - it has the same ballistics as a 17HMR to 100 metres and a lot cheaper to shoot.Buff Buster wrote:

I've had mine in Remmy for a while now and would rate it as the perfect bunny gun under lights and I've even knocked over a fox at about 75 metres.

Have you got foxes , rabbits and hares in Katherine ? Another property down South ?
I'd go .204 . Less powder , better barrel life , less noise and seems accurate in most rifles . Enough grunt for what you are shooting .
The .22/250 stretches cases very badly when operated near full throttle . You seem to spend half your life trimming . I have had .22/250 and Swift and reckon the Swift is a lot better . Generally slightly more accurate too according to Ruger .

Re: Choices
22-250 and 204 is a dead heat. The do the same things. Depends on if your bothered by noise. With the right gun you can see your hits no worries with the 250. A new stock on mine has made that difference for me.
As for the rimfire, 17HMR hands down. Still days its dangerous out to 150, they are accurate as heck and are great starter rifles. You can get a basic wood/blued marlin varmint for the 450 mark.

Mate, i would go the 22-250, but i am biased.
Mind you nothing wrong with the performance of the .204 a lot of people are adding them to their safes and love them.

Re: Choices
204r in a t3 varmint, cz 452 in 22lr.
just my 2c
just my 2c
Re: Choices
I like this! Go the 22-250 mate, A little more powder or a little more trimming or a little more noise doesnt kill anyone!
Re: Choices
Im not too experinced with center fires so im not going to tell you which one to get, but i am with rimfires. Now i haven't shot a HMR but i do have a 22 magnum with cci 30 jhp sight in at 25 meters and your flat out to 100. Now i reckon thats pretty close to the HMR. Also you can have a couple of 50 jhp in you pocket in case something bigger comes accros your path ect.
Re: Choices
Here is the chart i copied and paster off cci's website:
17hmr 17gr v-max
Trajectory if sighted at 100 yards
25 yards -0.5
50 yards 0.1
75 yards 0.3
100 yards 0.0
22 WMR 30 jhp
Trajectory if sighted at 100 yards
25 yards -0.1
50 yards 0.7
75 yards 0.8
100 yards 0.0
You also have a wider diameter bullet, more weight options, greater retained energy and cheaper ammo with the magnum
Edit: just checked cci's website, they also have a 30gr v-max bullet which flattens its tredjectory even more

Re: Choices
What a choice to have to make.
If I were to go 22.250 it'd HAVE to be Ackleyerated, just to slow the stretching; but go for the 204 in either Savage, Tikka, or something similar, for mine....
