WSM WILDCAT
Okay it look's like Tezza might build himself a new toy .
I will be fairly light(Aiming at 3.6kg(MAX) scoped & ready to hunt).
Scope will be a Vx11 2-7x33 with a set of Leupold QR mounts & rings.
Also whilst I'm building, put on a set of low profile type open sights. As they do come in handy at times.
Here are my Calibres of choice, just big ones .
PS-I've given one vote to the 366(That might change ),as I've always wanted a 9.3 calibre.
Plus now I can see all your votes.

I think the 416 makes the most sense particularly using the Woodleigh 335gr PP. Your all up weight should be okay as long as a Decelerator pad is used and the stock is fairly straight. Your recoil figures will also be verging on cross-bolt territory ... make sure your bedding is well sorted out as split stocks are expensive lessons.
Cheers...

Tez,
Makes no difference what the donor rifle is ... make sure your bedding is upto scratch. You can probably get away without the cross-bolt but make sure its bedded properly. I split a Ramline stock on a 458WM that "looked fine" but unbeknown to me the action screws where severely undersize in the stock. That allowed the action to move slightly resulting in a split stock. Likewise you'd want the tang relieved slightly, possibly also the magazine box so that it doesnt wedge into the stock and split it.
Big bores are great fun by the way!!
Cheers...

I can't see this stock spitting as these where one of the best synthetic's Winchester bought out.
A mixture of graphic, high tec polymer that has a softer more pliable feel(Maybe a Teflon mixture.I have the exact ingredients that went into these stocks, just have to dig it up).
Plus they went great in the 375 H&H,so I cant see a need to cross bolt.
As the recoil wont be that much more in a 416WSM(If I use this cal).
But I will be getting it bedded/floated whilst getting the barrel fitted,so mate I can see your point for sure.
Hey Con,what barrel(STAINLESS) do you recommend?
I want something cheap that will do the job.
Originally when I was going to build a WSM WILDCAT two years back.I had a Shilen on mind but this rifle will just be a handy lightweight gully crawler that I intend to treat like shit(They make a handy shrub stick) .
(I had always intended on smoothing the action(Winchester's usual machine marks). But I really cant see the need any more,as this rifle feeds super slick already).Mate what do you think? What's the cost approx?
What do the Shilen's go for these days?Wait?
MAB,are they still going strong in the way of quality?Wait?
What about Tobler?
Cheers

Tez,
Barrel: MAB stainless ... about $400ish for a 24" ... I'd cap the 416WSM at 22". Cant see the need for a "premium" on a working Sambar rifle ... if the 'smith puts it together properly it'll sub-MOA anyway. Get Clem Stevenson to build it as they have the reamers ... check his price out to supply a MAB barrel and price a barrel yourself too. Go with the cheaper of the two options. Get him to bed the rifle at the same time ... they should have experience enough doing it. Get open sights fitted ... take-off Rem sights are pretty cheap ... for those "just in case" moments.
Regarding the .35s ... the stainless 358Norma wont happen, I think it'll be built on an M17 instead. The 358Win is still a delight to use, the most versatile is the Ruger 350RemMag. Planning a 303/35 as well on a No4 action if I can find a cheap donor action.
Cheers...

Any other suggestions on barrel length & profile ?
PS-How about the Smith on this forum.
Any expertise in WSM wildcats?
Saw some of his work(Brake on Jack H's Browning A-Bolt),looked to be very well done.
Tez,
Profile is dependant on what you feel comfortable with. Discuss it with the 'smith that builds the rifle. I dont know anything about the factory 300WSM barrel contours but if you have to go heavier your barrel channel will need opening up. Personally ... I think dont go too light ... nor too heavy ... whatever makes it feel balanced correctly and bugger the overall weight.
In the SSAA article ... I think it was about $700 (?) to fit a C/M barrel to your action but I think that included dies. The bloke has done the back-ground work, I'd go through him as your not paying for another 'smiths education time, purchase of reamers etc etc etc...
Cheers...

Tez,
Yes mate i have built plenty of WSM wildcats and can do a 416 if you wish.
As for barrels, its hard for me to say this but forget MAB as their bore finish has been just to rough lately. I have fitted hundreds of MAB's over the years as my standard grade barrels and always found them good but the last couple of years they have dropped in quality. Sorry MAB its a shame to see.
For the price go for a Walther, the last .416 i built cost the customer $650 for the barrel fitted and blued. A stainless i think would work out about $850 but would have to check the current barrel price.
cheers,
Shane

Hey Tez, why reinvent the wheel. Just do a 416 taylor-Shane has the reamer,Lee does cheap dies-Woodleigh,Speer, Hornady, Barnes all do projies.
From my info * 416 Rem does 400gn at 2500 for 5553 ft/lbs
* 416 Tay 400 2400 5333
* 404 Stalker 400 2125 4008
404 stalker is the aussie version of 300WSM necked up as written up in ASJ a few months back.
You projected weight of of 3.6kg (8lbs) is just right for a walk around Sambar varminter. My 416 tay weighs a poofteenth under 8lbs with its 2x leupy. It's fine off hand but a handfull off a bench rest
An 8lb rifle shooting a 400gn at 2400fps with 73gn of powder generates 64 ft/lb of recoil energy at a recoil velocity of 23 fps.
For comparison a 10lb 243 shooting 100gn at 3000 generates a mere 9 ft/lbs at a velocity of 8 fps.
$650 for the Walther barrel, shit Shane where did the rest of the money go? Thieving bastard
The interior of the walther barrel is excellent
If you go for a 9.3WSM the ballistics will be identical to the 350Sambar done in Guns and Game a while back, theres only 0.008" difference in diameter between the 35 and 9.3
Either way you will have a great VARMINTER
Cheers
