made an inquiry about a T3 . Just waiting to see what calibers are available and of course it's the prices just went up today crap again. Only 243's in stock in other brands . There's a couple of old swedes there for $500 mark but the salesman said i wouldn't be overly interested in them

Hi aussie,
Had the same problem, had a .243, not big enough for the big stuff, too big for rabbits and foxes if you wanted to keep anything, rebarreled the .243 to .308 (heavy barrel for long range) and bought a .223 ss Howa, something seemed to be missing , bought another win mod 70 .243 and have never regretted it.
Good advice from kjd.
Regards Alpal

7rem mag, that fits the bill for just about everything, then you can just dump the other cr*p..

seriously though.. go the pope (243), it cops a lot of rubbish as a nothing calibre, but it'd be my pic for something in between.

finally .. I hit 100 posts!!

25/06......too much powder, recoil, noise & throat erosion for a good varmint round and lacks the grunt of the mighty 270 win.

Actually it's got a lot in common with the 220 swift :!:

I filled my gap with a 25-06, though only having the one kill so far, on paper it shoots everything well from 75gn out to 120gn pills. Very accurate and flat shooting and I have sussed in my travels that every gun shop ive been to since I put a deposit on it has had ammo for it. They do burn a fair amount of powder though and are noisy. On the weekend I thought id take out my earplugs 'just to see'...... :x

See totally disagree with every thing you said! It is a brilliant varmint round and if I didn't have a 7mm08 i would have a 25-06!

CB,

The 25.06 handloaded stands right on the heels of the 270 .. maybe thats because its basically the same case

I have never noticed that the 25.06 is too loud, maybe you need better quality hearing protection

It is an outstanding varmit round and is one of the few cailbres that can keep the Weatherby's honest.

It is commonly used in the USA for varmiting on woodchucks and groundhogs to over 500 yards and backs up for use on deer ....

If that doesn't cover most ferals in Australia then I have been hunting in the wrong country.

But each to his own while, your shooting something else your not using up my 25 cal stuff.

cheers

If you could buy the range of projectiles in .25 calbre that you can in 6mm then I'd have a .25/06 instead of a .243 Ackley .
Has a lot going for it I reckon , but then I love the .220 Swift too . Fast , flat and furious fornicates ferals ! Within reason I couldn't give a fat rat's arse how much powder it uses or how much noise it makes . Powder is made to be burnt and a .22LR will deafen you without ear protection .

When your head stops pinning from all these comments---and all bloody good advice too, you should seriuosly consider a 6.5 x 55.------but in a new modern rifle. The 223 can still be your spotlighting rifle, you will get great use out of the Swede, and the 308 will sit in the cupboard and rust away-------- Have you thought of rebarreling the 308 to 260 Rem?
Cheers Malcolm
