Tez ,
I had an original Sako .220 Swift which I foolishly sold to buy a Remington VSSF in .22/250 . The .22/250 could never get near matching the Swift for velocity (or accuracy although that was crap Remington quality control) . Also got pissed off with constant case trimming when loading the .22/250 to 3800 FPS with 50gn V Max and 760 or 2208 . Rebarrelled to .243 Ackley in the end .
Will buy another Sako Swift when I find one . Doubt that I will ever own another .22/250 .
Lots of stories about the Swift being a barrel burner . BS if you use a slow burning powder like AR2209 as I always did .
Standard .243 with the 55gn Nosler at 4000 FPS is no slouch . B.C. of 55gn .243 is higher than most in .224 . That projectile shoots in the 3's from my rifle .

For pure speed in a 22cal ... try a 224Clark. There are reamers for it in Australia, but its usually set up to shoot the heavy .22cals at reasonable speeds, as at 53gr you can get 4300fps but its burning more powder than bullet weight . I dont think you can go past the 22/250AI or 220Swift if you want to shoot the lighter 55gr projectiles fast, from then on its definitely diminishing returns. I think bushchook has a good point though ... these days its probably best to move to 6mm if you want to push light projectiles fast and do it in a pretty much standard package. I'd personally love to try a long-heavy barrelled 6mmRem with the 55gr Noslers.
Cheers...

the second pic of the rabbit is the best. supposedly getting shot is terrible and hunters should be ashamed for the pain they cause etc etc...Tez wrote:WOW .

another velocity monster is a 224 Vias- 6.5x55 necked down and imp to .224 cal.
75 Amax at over 3800 fps.
You can make something similar bu running a 22 Br reamer into a neckless slightly short 6.5x55 chamber to make it into a 22BRx55.
the vias has been used at 1500+ yards on pds.
so the 22BRx55 should be able to do the same here on rabbits and foxes etc etc

maybe try this with a 22 BR reamer and .243 case
WILDCAT DEN--Fireball's "Tall BR": WarrenB ("FireBall") has devised a simple way to improve the performance of the .243 Win: "I call this my '6mmTBR', which is a .243 with the long neck and 30° shoulder of the 6BR case. I simply took Lapua .243 brass and ran it into a 6mmBR body die to give the .243 a 6BR top end. The resulting cartridge is like a Tall BR, hence the 'TBR' name. I shoot the TBR in a Panda and it is incredibly accurate. Combine the TBR with a 70gr Nosler BT and you have an awesome windy-day Prairie Dog rifle. Or you could use it competition. At 600 yards, I think the TBR would give the 6XC, 6-250 and other mid-size 6mms a run for their money. And if you already have 6BR dies there are no tooling costs involved. Plus you get to use Lapua brass. The 6XC and 6-250 can't claim that!" [Editor's note--The TBR rivals the 6-284 with much lower brass cost.]

Mate I have the wthby special varmint (aka redmist with a tan stock). It came with the swivels which was a surprise and a 3 shot target that had 2 touching and the 3rd blew it out to inch.
Cant say Im overly impressed with it and I havent even fired the bloody thing yet!. It only cost 860 odd but by the time the trigger is worked and the bedding fixed, I could of brought jb747's 22-250!!! and thats a remmy.
Trigger's are of poor quality and the plunger ejector shoots the empties several feet, which is more of a hassle when ur using it for roo shooting and the empties end up all through the ute. And yes I am aware that remmy's also have this feature!!.
Looking back, Id buy another ruger VT in 22-250 before buying another vanguard.
Ohh and the stocks on the vanguards synthetics are absolute crap!!. The flex in them is woeful id be looking for another option if trying to shoot decent groups.
IMO, wthby shld of kept their line with the MkV and not lowered their standards with vanguards.
