204 Rugers

Post by Tez »

Who has one(Brand)? & what are your thoughts in general?

Are they all they are talked up to be?
By all the talk on the forums(US),they reckon it MAY topple the great 22-250 as king of the Varminters(Standard cal's) mmmmmmmm.

Yes, they are as good as they say. Cant say they are better than all other varmint calibres as havent shot them all. Have a 223 but limited use so far.

Mine is a ruger Vt. Regrets, it shoots very well so cant justify a custom 204 yet though the calibre is so accurate i will have to have one one day. Wish i had bought a Rem as Shane recommends that action as best start for a custom job

Tez,

I am suprised mate..I would have thought a nice .224 WBY would meet all your needs and fit right into your gun cupboard

224 WBY introduced in 1963, same year as the 22-250 factory by Remington and are virtually identical ballistically.

I'm thinking that the 204 (or some similar variant) will be my next rifle, that or something big.

Arch if you have a 17hmr, soon a 6/250 my next rifle would be a 30cal.

.300wsm if reloading would be my choice! Hmmm a ruger no1 in stainless with a 26''hv barrel, that would be sweet! 125gr bt's travelling at near 3500fps maybe.....

Tez,

Old photo of a gun that got away...you don't regret the sale till after its done ..

dave,
300WSM would not be my first choice for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the uncertain future of winchester. I would look at 300 Win Mag, 30.06,even good old 308 many to choose from in 30 cal.
WSM may be extinct in the near future
Remember that the WSM is a monster when it comes to action and wont be good for much else either.

Good point, do you think any other company may buy the patents for it perhaps as they seem reasonably popular if it all goes to hell?

dave,
No I dont think they will be continued by the rest...the WSM and WSSM have not got the following they were intended to get. These were to be the saviour of Winchester well that didnt work.
The 300WSM only relicates the 300Win Mag without a belted case, belted mag's are no harder to load than anything else so where the advantage.

The WSSM's well they couldnt give them away in the stores could they ..   They dont achieve anything that more established calibres dont already do.

The only execption would be the 25 WSM but it was among the last released and has a lot of solid competion from the 257 and 25.06 why should I change over.

All in all the benfit of the calibres was lost by being to close to competitors with established followings.
The problem isnt in the manufacture of rifles its the brass and dies that will disappear

May never happen ..who knows for sure.

cheers

so in an equal weight rifle with equal weight projectiles in FACTORY rounds, is the 300 win mag about the same in recoil as the 300wsm? I know this is a little off topic, but I thought that the 300win mag was known for nasty recoil, the 300wsm Howa i used was fine even prone sighting it in.

Archfile,

In a word "yes"

Calibre...........bullet/velocity...rifle weight..Recoil energy..Recoil velocity
300 WSM........(180 at 2970)....8.25........... 23.8...............13.6
.300 Win. Mag.(180 at 2960)....8.5............. 25.9...............14.0

Not a lot of difference there..

cheers

My mate has a Ruger 300 win Mag i have a win 70 300 wsm, cant tell difference in recoil firing them.

Coming from a bloke who is building a 6/250 on a forum full of wildcats, who cares if the wsm is discontinued as long as you have a good supply or can get brass.

I guess the WSM on a short action could easily be rebarreled with a change to the bolt head, Am I right Shane.

Since my wssm is worth $500 I will shoot it till it wears out and throw it away (so to speak)

Do a search on WSM and patents, and you'll see why it isn't likely to last in the longer, or even medium term.

Yes, people could pay the patent holder, but as the factories have so many choices which don't involve royalties, then they are very likely to choose that route.
