Rem 788 .222 - the old clunker has still got it

Post by Branxhunter »

A few years ago a picked up a Remington 788 chambered in .222. Reshaped the stock, bedded it, fitted a Timmey trigger and put together a load of 19.5gn of AR2207 under a 55gn Nosler Shots SP which it shot quite well.

The neighbor wanted a rifle to knock over some furry ferals so I sold it to him. A year or so ago I had to knock a stuck case out of the chamber for him - it had been left outside while camping on a property down near the beach and the chamber and outside of the barrel was rusty.

I polished the chamber with some lapping paste on an empty case spun on a cleaning rod chucked in a drill, which fixed the sticky case issue.

I have the rifle here at the moment so gave it a thorough clean, replaced the old Simmons with an even older Weaver K8 AO then took it out for a shot just on last light this evening - no problems with this old clunker!

Was my first center fire rifle, and the only Remington I have owned, good bit of gear. They sure shoot well for a cheapy, I think I only payed about 180.00 for mine from Mick Smiths in Sydney. :D

Tried a few more loads this morning. Seems it likes the old school softpoint or HP projectiles rather than the new fangled plastic tip jobbies.

Still a good looking rifle.
I have three 788's in the safe - 222, 22-250 & custom single shot 22PPC. I'm planning on re-stocking all three, as the stocks on them have been tampered with.
I would like to track down a decent original 788 in 7mm-08.
