So Jeff those two key action issues, would you pick up a used Remington and screw on your barrel or would you expect that there would be some work to true it up to BR standard?

Re: Importance of rifle build components
But back to OPs quest. I saw no change whatsoever when i transplanted a Deviant into a 700 varmint rig. Same 6BR barrel shot same loads into the same hole from the same stock. It cost more and looked prettier and was indeed smoother. But that's it. So i am echoing Grant's words having had a few custom jobbies.

Tony I’ll ask the same question I asked Jeff. Was the action stock standard or did you do anything to true it? And if you were to fit a factory action to a br rifle would you true it up

Re: Importance of rifle build components
Trev the action was trued. Action face, bolt face as well as both bolt and action locking lugs were squared up. Nose turned and fitted into barrel spigot. Thread was chased as well. Timing was adjusted as well as firing pin spring bind relieved to prevent bolt jump on firing. Firing pin bushed back to 60 thou. So no, this was not an as is from the factory action. It was and still is a very good Rem 700 action. All these adjustments are standard Rem 700 modifications that you will never recover money on at point of sale. Luckily im cheap.

Thank you Tony. That’s the point I’m trying to make to the humpy one. Maybe he is right about the action only holding the case in place until the firing pin strikes but having an action that is worked properly is the key for br accuracy

And the point I was trying to make is there are more important things in the building of an accurate rifle, both pretend target and live target, rifles.trevort wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 12:09 pm Thank you Tony. Actually, I didn't raise the subject to discuss actions, it was just a relay of a discussion that I had with a gunsmith, who mainly builds high quality target, both pretend and live, rifles, the rest was pretty much a hijack when a couple of others thought I was having a go at custom actions, that was not the intent.
But, carry on. At least it got a few people posting on the forum again.

be truthful. You were trying to soften up a sucker before listing nasty zastys in the classifieds
