Well I am neither a Sako or Tikka owner, but I would love to hear what would make someone scared to use a bronze brush in the bore to clean it. Most problems come from bad cleaning techniques rather than anything wrong with the products. I suspect that you have heard some bad stories that are dreamed up to cover up operator errors.New to 223 wrote:Are you Tikka and Sako guys using bronze brushes to clean the bores?
I haven't been game enough to use one yet, only a nylon brush with pro shot copper remover.
I read so many good and bad things about them, it scares to me to use one.

Not scared, more worried that bronze brushes will damage the bore, maybe someone with a borescope can put my fears to rest ?

Sako 22 250 reckons the sako manual says dont use a bronze brush. Are sako barrels really soft or something?

Anschutz and Tikka say only clean in the direction of the bullet, others say back and forth.
It's so confusing.

Well I don't see how it could damage the barrel, unless they are made from some soft alloy. Damage could occur from the cleaning rod, but not the brush.

Put the bronze brush through 3-4 times from the beach. Do not pull it back through. Unscrew it and remove cleaning rod and screw it on again.
THE REASON
Bronze is brittle. Changing direction of stroke will, after a few changes of direction, cause the bristles to break off.
ALSO
Put the brush through dry. It should be the first thing done in the cleaning process. Why? Do it and watch all the shit come off the brush as it exits the muzzle. You have just removed at a minimum 50% of the carbon fouling in the barrel. Now go to your nylon brush with a good solvent then patch it out.

I have ALWAYS used bronze brushes with butches bore shine in my sako barrels and have never had any problems.
I use pro shot s/s rod and bronze brushes and of course a bore guide( an absolutely essential item).
When I brush out the bore I always push the brush CLEAR of the muzzle and give it a 1/4 turn before I CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY bring the brrush back until it clears the chamber .
Then I give it another 1/4 turn and repeat.
This works for me and and should for you, your sako manufactured tikka barrel is nice and smooth so it doesnt require hours of scrubbing .
The routine I use is... for every 2 rounds I will make 1 pass (push through then pull back), if I fire a box of 20 or more I will make 10 passes.....
All passes MUST BE DONE SLOWLY, DO NOT RUSH IT, dont be worried about using a bronze brush (its soft as shit) and used correctly will NOT harm your bore.
One more thing...do not reverse a bronze brush whilst in the bore, it will wreck the bristles and may slighly scour the polished surface, also if you use a cheaper brush it may snap off inside the bore...this happened to me once when I was cleaning a Kimber .223....the first .223 I owned.

Thanks SA Feral shooter, I was going to ask your advice, I know you shoot Sakos.
I'll invest in a few bronze brushes and try what you suggested.
Cheers.

I only push the brush through one way then remove it once it's at the muzzle, pull the rod back through attach the brush and repeat until happy everything is as it should be, do the same for the jags for the patches too, works for me and I also use nylon brushes at times too.

As per Trevor's post I only use patchs oil / solvents and don't scrub my 85's as per the Sako manual not sure why they recommend this?
Note I shoot fur not paper and am lucky to fire 200 shots in total from all my guns per year so copper to date has not been a issue for me,others here know much more than me on this issue
As camel said must be soft barrels

How did that tin of Cometa pellets shoot in the 204 N2223?

The empty tins are good for keeping the pull through in.
