Re: Critique my custom build plans
Another thing to watch out for and its only minor but i have seen it happen is if you use the .473 boltface for the 6.5x55.
Remington brass is a bit hit and miss but generally runs about .472 and can eject from the .473 boltface but Lapua brass measures around .480,
I know it dont sound much but they can and will fail to release from the ejector/boltface.
I struck this with mine and fixed it by opening the boltface a flies dick.

Re: Critique my custom build plans
Thanks again everyone, especially for the snipers hide thread link, lots of good info in there,
After even more thinking, I'm still kind of leaning towards the Sako 75 action and plain 6.5x55. I'll mull it over a little longer and see what happens.
Obviously if anyone is looking at moving on a long custom action then let me know.

Re: Critique my custom build plans
So 6 months later and here it is.
I placed a wanted add on used guns and picked up a well used 75 finlite in 257 roberts for not ridiculous money. Probably could have found a better doner if I had held out but I was in a rush.
I had a 28.5" maddco barrel fitted, sort of the standard Sako varmint profile but with a longer parrallel section and a bit added to the muzzle end. Threaded m18x1 with a discreet thread protector, or a Terminator t3 brake.
Near mfg rail fitted so I didn't have to buy any 30mm optilocs to suit the sightron s3 scope.
Heaps of gunk cleaned out from the trigger by the smith, and a lighter Spring fitted by me.
I wanted a McMillan, but struggling to decide between a Sako varmint or a5. As an interim the smith has extended the inletting on the laminate that was fitted to me 6ppc to suit the IV action and bedded around the recoil lug.
I picked up some AR2213SC today and hopefully will get some 140g AMax loaded tomorrow ready to see how it shoots on the weekend.
All in, it owes me about $1k more than had I bought a new Sako 85, that includes the rail and the brake, and is before I try and sell the finlite stock. So pretty happy with the cost.

Easier to chop some off than add some on...
Here's another photo with the T3 fitted to make if even longer.

To be serious, I figured that's why you went long first off. Easier to trim it down later. Of course there's always the risk of trimming it down just that fraction beyond the sweet spot.tripledeuce wrote:Easier to chop some off than add some on...

Chambered in a swede I take it?
Lookin very nice!! 2213sc should serve you well. I have run over 50gr but that is AI formed cases in the savage.
The slowish powder should be helped by the longer barrel. Look forward to some groups

Maybe he's planning to use it as a modern black powder rifle...He's probably working on a carbon fibre ram rod for it now.trevort wrote:he wont even need to pull trigger, just poke holes in the target with the barrelstinkitup wrote:Chambered in a swede I take it?

It could be tricky getting the powder down past the brake...

Re: Critique my custom build plans
I know it is long but it's not that ridiculous is it?? Heaps of guys on the snipers hide link have longer.
I'm hoping to get 140grainers as close as I can to 3,000fps, letting as much of the powder/gas do its work as possible can only help.
I'm a fan of short barrels too, my ppc is 20", and I would consider going shorter. Different tools for different jobs.
