Accuracy International AT

Post by Mulga »

I bit the bullet and took out a second mortgage and have ordered one. For the last 10 years I have wanted something like this, always lusted over a Sako TRG. Now I have committed and can't wait to set it up and shoot it. I will be getting a 24inch 308win as standard but have ordered a 26inch Maddco in 260remington. I'm still umming and arring on the scope but have shortlisted it to Kahles K624i with a MSR reticule or a Nightforce BEAST with the MIL-R reticule; though I still might change my mind as there is no perfect scope out there at this point with everything I'm looking for.

Good onya bloke. I hope it's everything you want. I'm a bit of a fan of the .260 so will be interested to see how your rifle goes with the second barrel screwed in.

how do they ensure headspace if the barrel is only hand tightend. Do they use match marks?

Be interested to see how you go with the collapsable stock, I didnt think they were legal here. I could be wrong though

Still an interesting looking rifle

Trav, while I had the tikka apart I was curious about the headspace in regard to the torque used to tighten the barrel. The difference between 40ft/lbs and 150ft/lbs is less than a thou in headspace.

Hope this helps.

Hand tight is all it is. Apparently (I haven't seen it myself) they have made a cut into the bottom of the tennon thread area and the 4mm bolt pinches everthing togeather, if you follow my drift; a proven design from the PSR sniper contract (US military) and barrel change repeatibility is reported to be excellent.

I have a switch barrel for my Sako 75 to go between 25-06 & 338-06 both have been machined with the correct headspace. And as Kickinback says barrel torques then has little to do with headspace. Though consistent torque would lead to more consistency.

I will be getting the non-folding standard variety. Folding stocks are legal in QLD if >= 75cm folded. However almost impossible to get through customs. This rifle can be retrofitted with the hinhe but I couldn't be bothered.

Here is a link of what Mulga was talking about with the barrel lock up.
Even though this is the AXMC rifle in the link, the AT tightens up the same way.

Congrats on your new purchase Mulga. You will have lots of enjoyment with it. Expect a lot of people asking you questions about your rifle. Will be waiting for the range report when you get it.

It's slowly coming together, I will have it up and running late this month fingers crossed.

It came with a Lothar Walthar 24 inch 308win barrel (which I will keep on ice). Maddco turned me up one of theirs in 260 Rem; 26inch AI profile, cerakote graphite black. I have a Vortex Razor 4.5-27x56 Gen2 for it, but still waiting on a new rail and Spuhr ISMS mounts to finish it off. The standard rifle comes in about $400 cheaper than a Sako TRG when imported direct via sporting services in the UK. Incredibly slick bit of kit.

Splitting hairs difference, but I think the 260R has the edge particularly on the platform I'm running.

Taken her out twice now and am a very happy camper :D I still have a few bits and pieces inbound that are super hard to find here in Aus such as a lower 20MOA rail, Aadmount flip up caps. Load development is damn close and just need to do a final confirmation; so far a consistent 1/2 MOA 5 shot performer and 1/4 when I do my bit or get lucky; enough precision to whack stuff out yonder; I will cherry pick a group one day for the fridge  . Either barrel will shoot, the Maddco 260rem of course is excellent 1/4 inch 5 shot groups at 100; but my opinion of the Lothar Walthar 308win has increased markedly since I started to use it and is really a very good barrel and put a rapid 10 shots into 1/2inch at 100m the other day, very little fouling and easy to clean. The factory AI muzzle break tames the recoil down to less than the un-braked 260rem, but of course is much louder; recoil generally is pretty tame in such a heavy rifle and is like .222 sporter recoil levels.

The Vortex Razor HD G2 4-27x56 EBR-2C MRAD is a very good optic and continues to please me with its repeatability and the reticule is awesome. The Spuhr mount is rugged and high quality piece of kit, easy set up with its built in leveling wedge; however the in built bubble level is only really good for setting the Hollands level that I had to add; The offset bubble works exceptionally well; I can use both eyes open and see the level and the reticule at the same time 8)

The biggest challenge now is learning to read the wind; I took the 308 out to 1370 meters and the Kestral Applied Ballistics software provides accurate elevation; But I let it all down with wind calls
