Some may have noticed I mentioned I had a FFP scope in my 'range report'. I hadn't paid much attention to the whole FFP/SFP thing to date as everything I have used was SFP and that was that.
Has anyone had any experience with using a FFP scope for varminting? What I have is a Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 which sounded great, actually perfect for what I wanted.... until I wound the power up and it covered about 3/4 of an inch at 100. No idea how this will translate to a minute of rabbit, so I am asking if anyone has tried it before I take it to the field or do I offload it for a conventional SFP ??

My Kahles is an SFP, I haven't used it much, but it is fine to use for what I call varminting matexa-coupe wrote:Some may have noticed I mentioned I had a FFP scope in my 'range report'. Re: FFP Scope and Varminting
FFP is great when you have a reticle that can take advantage of it like a bdc, range finding or MOA/MRAD type reticle. For the std duplex/German post style of reticle not so much.
What it allows is that the reticles markings stay consistent throughout the entire magnification range. That is a 6-24x scope will have the reticle's markings represent the same measurement ie a 2moa marking will be 2moa regardless of what mag setting it is on.
A SFP scope with one of these reticles will only have the markings be accurate at one of the mag settings.
If you can see the rabbits just fine at full power you should be fine, if it bothers you in the field get rid if it but test it in the field. Either way you have a great hunting scope there but not one I'd use for varminting.
HTH.

Re: FFP Scope and Varminting
I don't have a need for mil dot type recticles so tend to avoid them, hence having a z plex (tm) in this one. If I need to know the range I bust out the handy rangefinder.
I guess I will stick with it for the time being. If I find it doesn't work for me I will deal with it then. It is a great scope not taking this into account.
Thanks !

Plenty of other reticles out there mate that make great use of FFP scopes not for range finding but for holding over.

Re: FFP Scope and Varminting
Jeff the scope on my rifle is a FFP scope. I'm pretty you should remember, that was the weekend that I out shot you with your rifle and you outshot me with mine!
While I like my scope.....well love it actually. It is not the perfect rifle for varminting. When used on high power, the crosshairs become fairly thick and while I do not shoot at small things at long ranges(rabbits at 500) I could see a problem seeing enough of them to take a shot.
I have a sniper scope. (Vortex razor 5-20x50) it has an MOA reticle so it may be different for other reticles but when on 20x the lines are pretty thick. My only drama with it is shooting groups. It makes aiming at a small POA difficult. So I generally use a square a aim at a corner putting the crosshairs at the edge of the square.

Plowboy,
The Vortex range of rifle scopes have never been military issue.
You have a "Tactical" style 'scope - not a Sniper 'scope.
Tactical Style can be anything from matte paint to anything else the Manufacturer thinks the military uses from movies.
NOT denegrating the Vortex range, I have a few different Vortex's both scope and Bino's.
