Re: Help me with a switchbarrel setup!
I used to want a switch barrel set up but after I thought about it for a while, I decided against it, after all IMO the point of having more than one barrel is to cover a few bases. Well different calibres are going to zero very differently if they are far enough apart in capability so that means re zeroing ect. The reason for wanting a switch barrel was for quick bernal changes for different shooting situations. But when thinking more about it, the stuffing around involved in changing barrels etc makes quick barrel changes not really possible. I mean it may take 5 mins to do but it's not like you are going around popping bunnies with a small .17 and all of a sudden see a pig, switch barrels and blow it away are you?
I reckon either a second rifle or a chambering that could cover a wider variety of targets is a better way to go.
Just my angle.

Thanks blokes. I wasn't thinking of doing the blahzer thing of pigs by day, foxes by night. I live in Wagga Wagga for uni, and I was thinking of leaving the 17 barrel screwed on when up there, as I mostly shoot small acreage up there, then use the 223 barrel when I'm living down at home in hay. The thought is almost there to go to the old 222? As it's a little bit quieter than a 223 to my ears, thoughts on that?

Depends on what you're shooting out west mate but have you thought of something in between? It would suck if you get all the way out there but forgot something you needed or worse stuff for the wrong rifle was brought along. Of course if you have a place to store another rifle out there get a big ol girl for the grunters.Jacko9 wrote:Thanks blokes. Re: Help me with a switchbarrel setup!
Kangaroos mostly out at hay mate, I do all the roo shooting for our farms (100 000 acres) I have a 358 Norma mag to go after grunters specifically, this is just my spotlight rifle, I was going to build a 20 cal, but I have just so many 22 cal projies etc, dies for 223, 222, so it was an easy choice, if I was starting afresh, a 20-222 would be getting built I think, but I've already got a maddco cz blank with a 1-10 twist rate for a 22 cal rifle.

Yeah fair enough mate. Looks like .223 for you there. You probably should look into reduced loads for wagga. Or look into those TC dimention rifles. If will be a work rifle after all and they look pretty good.

Shooting my 5.7 MM with 15 great of 2207 vs my 222 with 20 or so not much a difference in noise really.
What about running some 223 with trailboss. Should still be doing over 2000 for if you look around. Only 8gr of trailboss.

Re: Help me with a switchbarrel setup!
Why the need for low noise at Wagga? It's not exactly Winsdor and I doubt you would be shooting on really small places. Personally, I reckon this whole "I need a quiet centre fire because the block is small" is bullshit. A 17 is still loud enough that if someone is going to have a legitimate whinge about a 223 they will whinge about a 17.
Re: Help me with a switchbarrel setup!
All valid points mate. I shoot more towards Humula. Small acreage blocks really, probably should be 17 hornet style territory, can't get that bolt face on a left hander though. It seems to build a switchy off a cz is pushing shit uphill anyways. Might just go with a 24" barrel, rather than a 22" to keep it a little quieter.James270 wrote:Why the need for low noise at Wagga? The longer barrel only makes it quieter to you cos the blast is further forward from your ears, bet the neighbours dont go "ahh that shot was quieter, must have a 24 inch barrel now"Jacko9 wrote:All valid points mate. Jacko, just buy that switch barrel job that is on used guns at the moment, 308, 6ppc 22 ppc, all set up ready to go. Its only a Remington, but the price reflects that.

probably not a god almighty lefty
I think I will just stay with 223, with a trail boss load if I really need it, I always have the 358 norma for big animals

I agree with Con, the .30/223 really gets my juices going, I don't know why, but it does.

I was this close to building a 6.5/223... dies from CH4D be good with 95 vmax or some bigger slow stuff. Read about the 30cal version at the time as well.
