17 Mach2 Rabbit zapper.
Well I've gone and done it again. i bought another gun. I've been tossing up the idea of putting a surplus 17 cal barrel i have on my Lithgow. So off to the local GS for a box of 17Mk2 to see if it cycles though the mag and action. while i was in there buying ammo i spot a Remington 581 22LR. I've been keen on one of these or a 541 as the rear locking lugs (similar to Remingtons 788 centerfire rifles) offer the possibility of converting it to a micro centerfire. anyway i bought it at a good price and its soon to wear the 17 cal barrel and become a 17mk2 for a while.
anyway i get home and the Lithgow feeds mk2 beautifully. wish it did that with 22 ammo.
anyone have any experience with the 17mk2?
Keen to find out.

Re: 17 Mach2 Rabbit zapper.
I have a Sako Quad with all the barrels and to be honest with you the 17 mac2 is the only barrel I use, It is a very flat shooting little thing out to about 125 yds mine is zeroed at 100 and shoots point of aim at 50. I made the mistake of holding a touch high on a rabbit at 130 and shot high back to point of aim and wop in the back of the head, Maybe if I didn't have a 17 Ackley Hornet I would use the 17 hmr barrel a bit more. Most times I go walk rabbit shooting I leave my 22 lr at home and use the mac2 unless noise is a issue then out come the subs.
Just my opinion

Thanks. I'm looking forward to trying it out. Pretty much want a rabbit gun out to 125 metre mark without the cost of hmr.

I've got a quad as well and find the M2 the pick for rabbits, accuracy is on par with the HMR, plenty flat enough to 125 and not much dearer for ammo than a 22 if you look at the prices of power points, velocitors or similar.

I like the m2 alot but due to where I live I use 22lr subs 90% of the time.

If you need the range, but don't want to pay for the HMR, HM2 is where it's at.

Andrew
Interested know know about the rebarrelling process for a 581. Will you get the action threaded and remove the barrel pins? Who are you getting to do the work?
I have a much loved LH 581 that isn't getting much use as a 22rf since I got my Annie 1416. A 17m2 conversion could be the ticket to get it back into action.
Cheers, Jason.

JasonF, yeah i will get the action threaded.
i've been looking at these rifles for some time as i wanted to build a micro centrefire off one. cartridge probably a 17 pee wee or mini might. basically a shortened 17 ackley hornet.

Re: 17 Mach2 Rabbit zapper.
I got my Remington with 17cal barrel attached back from my smith last week and put a few rounds through it yesterday. first go no sghters the shot fell just right by half inch and grouped less then MOA at fifty metres. moved the ute back to a hundred, that's right too lazy to get out of the ute, and sure enough MOA just right of the centre . same POI and managed it in wind with a jumping 2yr old in the back shouting shoot now daddy.
buying a brick of ammo today will meet some rabbits tonight.
