Should I buy a Savage HMR?

Post by Bullcat »

I`m thinking of buying a Savage HMR but I have heard from a few people that although the rifle shoots very well, it does have a problem with bullet jaming in the magazine. So I am now in two minds on whether I should buy one or not...

I am on a limited budget as I now also want to get a .204... but thats another story.

In your opinion, what would you say is the best budget HMR out there at the moment?

G'day, i brought a Marlin hmr with the varmint barrel for 465 from HPGS. Shoots very accurate at 100m and pretty smooth action as well. The triggers are very heavy, $100 for a rifle basix replacement is well worth it. Only complaint about the marlin is the rear edge of the bolt handle has removed about .5mm of steel from the recess it locks into. Not sure if the heavy barrel makes any difference with such a light round but they sure look cool with the tiny bore.

i picked up a cheap marlin 917VS with the intension of changing the stock. THe trigger was bad, i fitted a rifle basix and it now has a magical trigger. The onyl downside with the rifle basix was the safety didnt work afterwards, i will get around to looking at it as i believe it can be made to work. as far as accuracy go i have onyl fired it at 50m and it shoots just over .3".

Bullcat

I have a CZ & Browning T-Bolt in .17hmr. My daughter's boyfriend has a Savage Varmint blued synthetic .17hmr with a Redfield 3-9X40 and loves it.

It is very accurate and a lot cheaper than my two rifles. IMHO I do not think the finish is as good on the Savage but with the Accu-trigger and the varmint barrel it is a good outfit. He has no problems dropping rabbits & foxes. :hunting:

I think if you got one, you would not be disappointed. Several gun (no pun intended) fox and rabbit shooters in the forums swear by them.

Bullcat, just have a look at all the posts by 'Fenring" he and his mates run Savage's with great success.
As far as varmint weigh barrels go, I have a ruger and had a CZ with the varmint barrel, and I could walk around with either of them for hours on end.

i just pefer a heavy bullet now that foxes and cats are all i come across. the 17 is a great bunny gun, but for flighty foxes it pays to have a little more ooomf i beleive.

main thing with a 17, they will foul easly due to the small bore...keep them clean and they will keep you happy
