I own one with set trigger , heavy barrell, rifle is fitted with 4 to 12 X 40 leupold VX III scope. Trouble is my 33 year old Sportco 62S shoots just as good If not better. Does anyone else own one, how does it shoot?

G'Day rolcar,
I borrowed a mates sako for a club BR match. He had put a 36x scope on it and it shot around .3" groups at 50m, very accurate and I didn't do it justice, lovely accurate rifle.
It now has a Jewel trigger and a Pro-Cal Br stock and is used at National level comps, same barrel just a better trigger and suitable stock.

My hunting mate has the same model Sako mate. It is a little ripper, very accurate even though he hasn't done anything with the trigger which is a trifle heavy (for me).

He will never part with it, although it has taken a back seat since he bought an Anschutz 1517 DHB in .17HMR. After shooting his Annie I bought a really nice one from one of our members here.

If you are not real happy with the Sako I reckon you should flog it off, (you will get good dollars for it as they are in high demand), keep your Sportco, and use the cash to get a .17HMR mate, I was pretty sceptical about the performance claims but am a convert to the little Hornady round now.

Thanks for the replies fellas.
Hey Ned what ammo does your mate use, and does he gauge and sort it for rim thickness. I do and I've used most brands except Eley match. Another member at the club has the same rifle as mine he had it re-chambered to match chamber, sorted his ammo by rim thickness and weight, mucked about with barrell weights , then finally had it re-barrelled, my rifle has never shot a .3 group , a few at .5 but mostly around .6, the other members rifle about the same which I think is not good enough when you consider the price they are!

G'Day RolCar,
from memory he was using lapua midas, as he said it was specially selected....straight from the packet to the loading port!. I've used the eley stuff subsonic HP and at 50yds I had a 3 shot slot with my Annie 64MPR and figured for hunting it would do me. I would expect the match eley stuff to shoot a little better.

Ned
I've tried the Lapua Midas grouped .5, I will see what it does with the Eley Match grade ammo. Thanks again Rolcar!

Yeah Rollcar, I've got one identical to yours - HB and set trigger. Shoots easy 12mm groups @ 50 with SK Mags when I do my part. I'm just an average shot, but it sure puts a smile on my dial when it comes to knocking over those pesky metal silhouettes. Its fun and I would never part with it.

However, your Sportco sounds like a goodun too. If you are not happy, why not flog the Sako to fund another project.

plantboy,
I have thought about selling it , I haven't shot it in over a year, lost interest, I thought I'd punish it and lock in a dark safe until it decided to behave, I think I'll bring it out and give it another chance.
Regards Rolcar!
