is a 22hornet 340c savage worth fixing ?

Post by deadkelly »

guy's i have a old savage 340c in 22 hornet .
it has a terrible trigger
a side mounted scope that is off set ( from the bore ) to the right about 4 - 5mm .
burred chamber & bolt face
& broken extractor .
now it only ever used to shoot 1 1/2 - 2" at best @ 100 meters .
i was intending on getting a 22 mag to fill it's roll ( mainly because the hornets not a head shooter as a lot of the hares are for food & the zoo's )
i have just laybied a 3-9x50 redfield scope to use on the 22 mag or the hornet for use at night with a spotlight .
i didn't really want to spend over $500 on a new 22 mag ( savage 93 FVSS $505 )
now I'm thinking if i spent that on the hornet it should be a good little varmint rifle with a bit more range & flatter shooting & i already have all the loading gear .
I'd get the following done
rechamber to 22 k hornet
new extractor / machine bolt face & head space
a trigger job
bed the action ( it has a barrel band )
& shim the side mount so the scopes over the bore
& maybe re crown the muzzle .
that may even run closer to $600 to get that done ????
what do you guys think ??? is it worth it .
being a savage with the barrel nut could this be used as a swap barrel gun (17 ai hornet) ???
i know some body will say 222 / 223 but noise is a issue .

get a quote from a gunsmith. It will cost more than you think. How do they get a burr out of a chamber, cut back and rechamber, hmm I reckon the cost will surprise you and you sure havent got a gun worth $600 more. I would say junk it. If you want another hornet the yanks love the browning micro or CZ

mmmm i wrote it off ages ago .
well i thought i could shim the scope mount myself as good as i could anyway .
have a go at bedding it & replace the extractor my self .
I'm sure running a k hornet chamber reamer in there would fix the burr issue . i was told to bodge it up with 600 wet & dry in a drill  .
i think they'd check the head space when they re chamber it .
so really that would only leave re chamber & trigger to be done by a smith . & file the protruding burrs from the bolt face . but " by law where not meant to touch our rifles " .
the last time i was quoted on a re chamber job it was $60-70 & a trigger job $100 .
extractor from the states $17 us + postage .
thats a bit cheaper & to look at the barrel looks OK .

A mate of mine has one, nice little rifle.

If you have the gear and know how, why not give it a go.

yeah i think i'll give it a go . i went to my mates place last night ( he works in a gun shop ) & he said $200 for trigger job & bedding .
headspacing is part of the chamber job $60-70
he showed me how to crown the muzzle myself
& to just clean up the bolt face with a file & wet & dry / but i can show smithy for his opinion .
i'll let smithy have a go at the bedding only because of the barrel band & recoil lug . ??? & bedding has a direct effect on accuracy
i might give my toz 17 22lr a go instead .
i'll let you's know how it turns out .
