The deer invasion is coming, warns Andrew Cox, the chief executive of the Invasive Species Council (ISC).
"[Deer] will be eating Sydneysiders' gardens, creating traffic havoc and wrecking Sydney bush land remnants that have been nurtured back to health by thousands of bushcare volunteers," he said.
The ISC, a not-for-profit conservation group, regards feral deer as the country's worst emerging vertebrate pest problem in Australia. Modelling shows that deer could easily spread across the entire mainland, says Mr Cox.
In Wollongong, perhaps the most affected urban area in Australia, Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said deer are eating the "lovely camellias" in his backyard. They're munching on the roses in the city's botanic gardens and increasingly coming into backyards, particularly those near bushland.
Time for some urban diesel stalking, I say.

Andrew Cox and the Invasive Species Council are one of the biggest causes for the raise in feral populations, their aim is to have all animal control done by poisoning with 1080, they refuse to admit that hunting and shooting will have any effect on feral populations, and as they have the ear of both state and federal governments, it is not likely to change any time soon. They are one of the biggest stumbling blocks for the introduction of a fox and feral cat bounty here, it is not in their interest for others to get a chance at proving them wrong as it might upset their gravy train and massive government funding every year. It is made up of radical anti shooters and environazis. If feral animal numbers were reduced, their lively hood would shrink.
Vested interest, conflict of interest, anyone.

They were also the most outspoken opponents for the hunting in national parks idea from a few years ago. Its either their way, or nothing, pretty much like the vegan idiots running riot these days.

Spot on camel, not once pre the changes to the deer regs did I hear him say farmers and employees were free to control deer by any means they liked. It was always deer need to be declared a feral pest so we can do something about them. The miss information he and the invasive species council have spread is probably responsible for the increase in deer numbers more than anything else.
Ironic that the introduced deer are eating introduced "lovely camellias" and munching on the introduced roses in the city's botanic gardens.
