Hi
Which callibre would be best between a 7mm-08 remington and 7x64 Brenneke Primery use target up to 500 yard Secondary use, hunting deer in australia Rifle will be for a woman so looking for less recoil Will be reloading for the riffle Looking at a Sako85 with a Leupold VXIII 6.5 or 8.5-20x50

G'day Warthog,

The 7mm08 are regarded as "....the optimal compromise between killing power, flat trajectory and shooting comfort..." and "...The 7 X 64 and the 280 Remington are virtually identical cartridges....." Vihta Vuori Volume 4.

If I were to opt for a 7mm08 it would be improved as there are substantial gains to be achieved in doing so. I also think that sourcing brass for the 7 X 64 Brenneke would be expensive and being a European cartridge brass would scarce.

I am now using a 7mm08 AI in 500 Fly, it is great cartridge and very efficient when compared to other calibers.

Regards

Sean

The 7mm SAUM from Remington has quite a following for long range target shooting. Would work well on deer too.
The 7-08 would have less recoil though.

Maybe a .270WSM would do?

Hi Warthog, the 7mm08 will be just fine ..My Silhouette gun back in the mid 90s would group 2.5ins at 500Met on a good day , sure would be good enough for Bamby's/ skippys and targets IMO.. JR..Jeff Rogers..Ps don't throat it for any bigger than 162/168s

A couple of blokes down this way that have represented Aus in Silhoutte also use the 7mm08.

Depending on what deer, it might also be worth looking at some of the 25cal and 6.5mm rounds if recoil is going to be an issue.

Hi

Thanks for the help so far. Think we will go with the 7mm-08. I have a 8.5-25x50 Leupy for the range and think i would look at a3.5-10x40 or 50 both on qd base's for the hunting side. What is the longest range the 7mm-08 would do acuratly.

I will be gearing up my 7mm08 to use at the next 1000 yard shoot in Canberra.

Although personally I wouldn't shoot game beyond the 200 meter mark.

Hi Sean

Thanks for your help i will most likely go with the 7mm-08. I just want to look at the .270 short magnum. But looking at the powder ratio. It looks like the .270 is going to be a throat burner and how is accuracy compared to the 7mm

Thanks

G'day Warthog,

My brother has a Model 70 Featherweight in .270 and it's a fine rifle, light weight and very accurate, problem is though it gets a little hot and kicks hard-it is not a range friendly rifle or something I would put my girl behind.

I am not all too familiar with the short Magnums but would prefferably stick with a caliber that is abundant in brass quantities such as those built from the .308.

I have also heard that Lapua are now manufacturing .308 cases with the small flash hole-this may take load development for the 7mm08 to a whole new dimension.

Regards

Sean
