G'day,
Keen on getting into 1000yd benchrest but cant find any ranges in Victoria? Do we only have 500 meter fly shoots in Victoria?
Was thinking of building something in 300WSM as my next project

Cant ask for a more accurate round with my experience out of the Kimber Montana that i own. Does everything the 308 can do and better duplicates the 300 winny mag so thought it would be a good caliber for 1000yd work. Have seen its used quite a bit in the US for benchrest and has been winning a few

Think about this info...
F Class Open, weight limit of 22lbs, no muzzle brakes.
1000yd BR, LG up to 17lbs muzzle brakes allowed. HG no weight limit but no muzzle brakes
500m Fly. LG up to 17lbs no muzzle brakes. HG no weight limit but no muzzle brakes
So, with the 300WSM which type would you build it for? 1000yd BR LG its fine, but then no muzzle brake in Fclass and 500m Fly. If built to F Class weight limit, how would you like to shoot your 300WSM against a dedicated HG, let say weighing in at 50-70lbs?
The best way around it is to have one rifle that can shoot all these. That means a 17lb rifle with no muzzle brake. 300WSM is not much gun for this.
Just trying to help out. Believe me, you will want to shoot the 500m Fly when/if you get a rifle built up. These is lots of options available, which is unlike short range BR. Short range there is one king..... PPC. Long range allows from 6mmDasher to 300YOGI, which are opposite ends of the playing field, but both have their merits.
Good Luck!
Cheers

Kav , I am currently helping a mate build a 300wsm for Heavy Gun , it will have no brake and be legal for FLY /600 yd and 1000yd .. It will come in at about 40 lbs and it will be competitive anywhere in AUS.. Limited Bullet/ powder combos available but it can be done ..JR..Jeff Rogers

Will be a nice rifle for sure... "HG 300WSM" rolls off the tongue just nicely!
Just if you want one accross course rifle, a 17lb LG is a no brainer... 500m Fly, F Class Open, 1000yd BR.. LG can be shot in two classes, a HG just one!
Cheers

Hey Kav,
I am also new to the long range shooting fraternity, and one thing i can say coming from shooting varmints and light game to the whole new world of Benchrest - its a complete different way of thinking. And im loving it.... Sure the Kimber is a nice rifle and you say its accurate sure, but when you see the hardcore guys shooting Fly at 500m its a very cool think indeed.
Im in the process now of having a LG Fly/open F gun built. It is a straight 6BR and will be a good learning rifle to get into the game. Yes do some more research and go to a few club days to see what its all about. There is a Open 200yrd BR day at little river at the end of the month (28th Nov??). So maybe check it out.
Also check out

Very good info on there.

Thanx mate.
Yeah 6mmBR looks like the way to go from what ive been researching today. Varmints and other critters is good fun so am interested to see how my skills shape up on paper. Trying to source where to get a stiller action in Australia or if it has to be ordered directly from manufacturer to dealer here.

Ratshot,
I and a few other I know would be keen if you could get tallangata on board with a few benches for 1000yd.
Corryong being that little bit further makes it a long day from Melbourne.

kav,
I see a few folks have given some good advice already but anyway ... the 300WSM has not performed all that well in Australia, why I am not sure, yes a few wins but nothing like the performance the yanks seem to get. I have seen numerous attempts with this calibre fall short. Now I am not saying it cant be done Murray & Ross Hicks have a 300WSM that goes just fine but thats 1 of dozens of attempts. Also I firmly believe that "I just want one" is more than enough reason as well.
But I will say that the 300WSM does not equal the 300 Win Mag in performance .. yes I have seen crony results on yank forums that say it does but they must have some special pixie dust there because I have helped a few lads try to make these things work and the crony just doesnt come up the same in Australia. I have shot side by side using the same crony with 3 different 300WSM's and all failed to reach the velocities the Win mag gave.
Either way there a plenty of choices ie 300 Yogi, 30 Boo Boo, 300 Ackley, 300 Hulk the list goes on and on.
Try to get to a match and have a look at whats there talk to the guys, they are a helpful bunch.
As for an action my advice is to decide what you are building before buying an action ... as to actually getting one Peter Van Muers at Pro Cal often has some in stock as does Dave Kerr in WA, Shane Clancy can order and import for you but for best results pick the calibre then get the action to suit.
