New Shooters to 500m Fly!

Guys

Just a quick thread, hopefully to entice new shooters to have a go at 500m Fly, or even something like 300m Fly that Shane holds at Leeton. 300m will turn into 500m before to long!

If any of you are interested at all, ask questions here.

Us that already shoot 500m Fly, would like new shooters to get involved and the sport to grow.

Not only is it great fun, but it will make you a better shooter. You will have a steep learning curve, but in that time you will learn more about reloading/shooting than you could ever think.

This forum alone holds a lot of knowledge.

Ask questions, dont feel that you cant post because you are worried that your question is stupid.. no doubt myself and all other shooters have been there at some stage.

Cheers
AI

AI,

I think you will find that the most recent shoot had the largest participation rate out of any Fly shoot that has ever been held in Canberra.

Next March the event will be run as a ten card match, no doubt the final results will differ as competitors with larger calibers will need be able to withstand the punishment.

Ok

The Fly shoot is intended to be shot at 500m, and for "Shooter Of the Year" you need to compete in at least 3 of these sanctioned matches.

Shane runs a nice little 300m Fly competition twice a year at club level, which is a load of fun. If you are worried about the distance, the 300m is a nice way for you to have a look at it!

You shoot 5 targets, with 5 scoring shots on each. On each detail/target, you are also allowed 3 sighter shots.

You shoot for both score and group on the one target, and these are added to give you a total score for that target.

In the middle of the target is a fly picture. If hit, this gives you a .1 to your score. The maximum score for each target is 60, but if the fly is hit all 5 times then the score is 60.5.. thats the perfect target.

Scoring is as follows... it is like any other match with scoring rings... you hit the 10 ring you score 10... hit the 9 you get 9.. but you can also get an extra 10 points for shooting a 1" group. i.e shoot a 5" group get 5 points for group, shoot 9" groups get 1 point.

The shoot is a lot of fun, and more should look at getting right into it!

Before I waste my time and money, what do you think of this.

It is only a idea at the moment.

If I were to have a rifle built up, full custom that is capable of being competitive at 500m Fly, would new shooters be willing to sort of "hire" it for the day?

I am thinking this is to get new people involved, and to get a taste of what it is about. If they/you like it and want more.. then I'll give them shane's number!

AI, nice idea - doesn't the relevant club have a rifle for newbies to have a try with ? A full custom is probably a bit lavish for the intended purpose, and the cost of a full custom could be intimidating for new starters. But hey if you're looking for an excuse to build yet another fab rifle it's not a bad one
While nothing flash I once loaned my rifle to some interested newbies who came along to have look at F Class. I was out of ammo and suggested that if they could buy some from the club, to have a go. They did so and were pretty stoked. Most newcomers I've met expect that they have to get their own rifle before they can have a go, so it's a real bonus if they can get some hands on experience

For guys that are interested.. to make it worth while for myself, I would need to charge around $140-$150 for a day of shooting 500m Fly. Do you feel this is to much money?

Considering you would be using a $6500 rifle..... use of quality front rest and rear bag... think of reloading costs, barrel life, general wear and tear.. plus my time reloading etc.

It is a cheap way to have a try before forking out the cash on rifle, when you might not be 100% into it!

If there is not enough interest, I will go build myself a even more fun toy.... like a 300varminter!

AI, I'd take you up on that - an opportunity to have a days "test drive" of a full custom rifle would be worth that, and probably convert a few shooters to full custom rifles like trevort found out (I'll be fine I won't get addicted  )
I'm far away from you so if your idea eventuates, I'd be looking at a bit of a shooting holiday to take in some events when my own rifle project is ready and work out a day for the "hire rifle" too

I'm interested in shooting the fly shoot. I have no idea where they do the shoot close to me. If there was somewhere close to home that had a fly comp on and you brought your loan rifle up, i would def be interested in loaning it for the day. How would my 1 in 12 twist .223 handle the 300 mt shoot? I think the 500 would be a bit too far for the .223

P.s I love TYNILLE WARNER

Damien, have a look into the leeton shoot. I believe there will be a few members going and its not that far from Harris park. (okay its 5 and a half hours, but still very "weekendable") I'm trying to get the Friday off, so if your keen we might be able to share the trip.
