AJR... you are crazy..... just like shit stirring huh....

Maybe it was the mentality that a large caliber/magnum was needed to be successful at these ranges, specially the 500m/600yds, and this is a good reason why they dominate the firing line like they do.

There is a slight swing towards the smaller 6mm's here now, the same as what has happened in the US at 600yds. You can not dispute this. Even top HG/magnum shooters have gone to the 6mm's at 600yds there.. It also seems that there is always a 6mm in the top 5 now at fly....

Also, for this 90 grain case capacity magnums, where does the 300WSM fit in? You know yourself that it is doing very well at all ranges, but it is away from that norm?

If I built a HG it would be a 30cal, in 300WSM. If muzzle brakes were allowed in LG, then my LG would be 300WSM. Since they are not, I think it really makes LG competive with a range of calibers/cartridges. This is what makes it fun.

Due to no muzzle brakes, I feel that what I lose in ballistically with a small 6mm (which is fuck all) at 500m, I make up ten fold in gun handling etc.

everyone to there own....

I am happy with what I have and know what it is capable of. Its never the rifle or cartridge that lets me down, its always myself.

Mate, I dont have anything to compensate for? Small dick big gun syndrome?

I am not going to argue anymore about this.

This type of thread is no good for new or intersted shooters. This is not how the sport is if you are one of these people.

If you are new and starting out, or keen to have a go at 500m/1000yds, all I ask of you is to contact many people about it. Some of us are set in our ways, and although we believe it is the only way to go, sometimes it is not. There is many people involved with custom rifles and competition shooting here to ask.

Jeff, as for your first post, only one sort of bloke would start a thread like that. Either that or you have to much time on your hands.... or you have not done any shooting lately!

p.s. Glasses in the mail Jeff... put them on and remove those blinkers!!!
p.s.s. what annoys me more is that "Cantberer" word.... :D

Seems like the perpetual argument strikes again.
From some-one who has tried just about everything at some time or another, i will just make two points.

Precision is the single most important factor no matter what caliber or cartridge is used. If the rifle is precise and will place the bullet in the score zone in the real world when you do your piece, then half the battle is over. The trick is knowing when you have this as paper ballistics mean little in a place like say Majura where seasoned shooters with ordinary grouping rifles can do well.

Without pouring more petrol on the barbie, my experience over many years has told me that while i can do well and perform with a multitude of cartridges and calibers, statistically i have done the best with the larger cartridges. Now this may be a little skewed, as it could be with JR, because not only can i drive a 200 SMK at over 3100 fps, i can run it at 5 shots in under twenty seconds like drop port should. If i have to i can also pick my way through and do well which is something i know i could not do as successfully with a smaller cartridge.

Having made those points, i am fully aware as Trev has pointed out, that in the US there have been some astonishing results achieved with the smaller cartridges. However i would have to shoot head to head with these guys at either our range or theirs with my statistically most successful combination to make an educated statement. From my evolution till present, my choice for both light and heavy gun is a 30 cal of 90 to 100 grains water capacity using the 200 SMK in the slowest twist rate i deem suitable. In the US i would just change over to the 210 Berger or 187 BIB. Trev and i have exchanged ideas on his new projects and i seriously do believe that he can do well with them, but they are not my choice at this point in time.

Hi All,
Full congrats to Jacko on his overall win. Has any-one noted that my 6mm Dasher came in 2nd in front of 19 heavies (including my own !!! - 7mm SAUM). The day's conditions put the emphasis on wind reading and inherent accuracy - both of which Jacko seems to have had in his favour - he is certainly a very good shooter. I apologise to the 'small-cartridge' brigade for letting the side down on this occasion with a mere 2nd placing - I am suitably contrite and promise to try harder next time.
Pete
