Well I had to call it something

After months of fooling about I have finally chambered a new Fly/1000yd barrel.

Now I have to give a big thanks to -aJR, TonyZ, Albow and dg, their help and advice has been instramental in the making of this cartridge. Thanks fellas

It all started back in February this year when I began discussion about a new light gun caliber with the blokes above. And I decided to make my own 'wildcat'.
Looking at what has been done already there wasn't much to choose from.
I researched a lot of various cases from short mags through to the 'compensating for something' types, but not anything in the 'pop gun' range. I wanted a bit more gun than that.
There was a couple I got really excited about as there was no info on the net about them being modified...only to be informed that they had in fact been tried "years ago" And yeah we are talking 'different' things like.....turning belts off magnum cases and reducing the case head sizes.....crazy stuff really

Brass was the biggest issue with designing something, some of the european stuff is just not available...or junk..or cost about the same as a fortnights groceries a box !...no kidding

The final result ended up being very similar to the 7mmJAT based on the 9.3x62 case. I was thinking of calling it the JAT MKII but feel the Forum needs a mention somehow..after all without it, it would not have existed

I have only fireformed a handfull of cases and ran the barrel in so far. (Jeff I tried the wet and dry method and saw no difference ¿)
This weekend should be nice enough to work some loads up and see how it performs.

It's fun isn't it! I've just started the ball rolling on what will be called a 358CRG with the reamer being ordered next week. I've also got the hots for the circa 1920's 350 G&H Magnum and requested reamer specs to have 4 different versions emailed to me! There aint nothing new under the sun!

What exactly have you done with your 7x62AV? Have you used the 9.3's wider body? What purpose is it for?

Yep...it has been quite an adventure..I got a great sense of satisfaction from it in the end, but there were days when I wondered why the hell I was bothering...good to see there is someone as 'disturbed' as me in here As you say there's not much that hasn't already been tried and a bloke can spend a lot of time working stuff out to end up with something that gives little benefit. This still remains to be seen for me yet

This is to be a dedicated Fly/600m/1000yd rifle, but I reckon it would knock over varmints in spectacular fashion with the right bullets. I have taken a bit of taper out of the case wall....shortened the shoulder and given it 40 degrees...which has lengthened the neck......so a simple description would be a shorter fatter 280 Ackley with a tight neck based on brass that can take a flogging

We've (group of 3 of us all 35cal whores) just used the 300RCM as a basis for a 35cal cartridge. It should (as a wildcatter you now understand the word 'should' ) give us a bit better than a 350RemMag and without the belted case. The theory (you get that now too! ) is that it's the greatest capacity possible using what will be a reasonably common case (not due in Australia until Christmas though ) without going to something like a 35WSM or 35RSAUM ... so it should be an 'easier' conversion for standard short actions. I'll be converting probably an M70 I have in 358Win, or buying a Ruger 358Win for rechambering, another is going into an RCM donor action, third into an M98. Will be interesting when Hornady receives the request for 3 sets of custom dies on their case!

Out of interest ... did you give some thought to perhaps using the 300RCM for your 7mm? Case capacity is greater than a 30/06, closer to the 300RSAUM ... the 338RCM is closer to a 30/06Imp but the shorter case may help in using long projectiles. Man ... I'd be itching to neck down the 300RCM case to a 277" but cant afford another reamer. Given the popularity of the 30/284 case for long-range use ... I'm interested to see how the two RCM cases are received.

That's a nice looking rifle there Kenny, as is the cartridge. Seen one or two of something similar up this way 50.5 of 2209, 168 SMK jammed with a 210M and you can go off to a match this weekend, garanteed.

One thing missing though, where is the tube? No good with no tube Kenny Please don't tell me you're gunna go with one of them "tunas". Should take about 1500 rounds with one of them things and then the final setting should be easy to find................. in the scrap metal bin. 10 ounces of futility or like a woman in menopause, different every day.

Well done on your new rifle. The case looks great!

You got to lets us know what velocity you can get with what projectile. Very close to the 280AI I would imagine, which will be perfect.

What the recoil like? Is it a short range BR stock you have used? Barrel length?

So, we will be seeing you at Canberra this month?

Yep looked at the Ruger case but it has a magnum size case head and when I started this, the action I was using was also my young blokes PPC with the change of a barrell, so I had no desire to change the bolt face. I have since brought him a PPC so maybe next project Brass quality was another issue....well with the short mags anyway...the Ruger stuff is unknown to me...how do you think it would stand up ?
The 284 case was a contender but after having the 6.5 version I got sick of the brass issues. And there's nothing not been done to that case already....done to death I think...they work but no-doubt

Sounds like your doing a neck up job...why not just make the dies from the std ones....bore the neck out ?

The tube and fittings are ready, just need to thread the muzzle It won't make LG in this stock..but I have half made a tube/mongrel looking thing out of alloy that will. Won't be long.
I just had to fire it ..it's been so long coming.
Thought it would be good to see how it performs out of the tube as well....not really a comparo but... I know it will shoot totally different 'tubed'.
I did the Kreiger sock pattern for a practise in case I stuffed it...no-one will it see inside the tube

The 7mm won the draw.. I hope thats an omen I will eventually get to Canberra but doubt if I will have things sorted by the Pro-cal shoot.
Gotta learn to drive this thing yet.....long range is a whole new ball game
