Rimfire Metallic Silhouette Rifle Choices

Gday fellas, well the revival of my interest in shooting sports is well under way thanks to this forum and I'm seriously considering re-joining the SSAA and becoming a member of my local range again, it's been about 10 years since I used to shoot there. I used to shoot rimfire metallic silhouette and brought my 6.5x55 for centrefire, tho never quite got around to using it out there much. Anyways back in the day I used to use my dads old Voere .22 B/A for the rimfire events, however in the interviening 10 years it's been used as a farm rifle so it's getting a bit tatty. I'm faced with the decision between spending some money on the old Voere, it really needs to have the barrel shortened and re-crowned to remove some damaged rifling, and a re-blue wouldnt go astray, or look for another rifle to use. I'm a bit budget limited so I have to be a little bit sensible with my choice. I've been looking at the Striling Model 1400TS single shot silhouette rifle online, yet to look at one in the flesh, and it fits into my limited budget pretty well. I know for the price I'm definately not getting an Anschutz, but I'm wondering if anyone here has had any shooting experience with these and could offer any advice. Thanks

Hi Joel , I have a mate who has one and is now looking at selling his now up graded to an anschutz. Its in Mint condition and had a trigger job. I use a CZ Silhouette for both classes and it out shoots me. I put a Brooks trigger kit in it and it reduced the weight and most of the creep . Mine sports a old 1979 Leupold fix 10x with AO. Best score to date was a 22, at my lase shoot I got my first 10 patch with pigs.

As it is 10 yrs since you shot, they probably weren't shooting Hunter rifle as well as Silhouette rifle so I would suggest you get something like a second hand Brno or CZ sporter or one of the cheaper Anschutz sporters, which you could use in both classes for silhouette and also for Fieldrifle which is a useful crosstraining match for silhouette.

RF Hunter Silhouette rifle has max weight 3.5kg, 2lb(907gm) trigger & must have a functioning safety catch, that is basically a factory rifle.

In fact many of our best shooters use their Hunter rifle for both Hunter & Silhouette matches.

I have an Anschutz 1413 super match and recently acquired a Bruno model 4 target for my fiance. At 50 meters the Bruno performs as well as the Anschutz (the Bruno does not have a thumb hole stock or the weight of the Annie).

We are yet to see how the Annie performs at 200 in a fly match.

Bruno once made a model 3, it was specifically built for silhouette, it had duel set triggers and a shorter barrel then the model 4 target, I think a model 3 may have been built on a model 1 action because the model 3 unlike the model 2's and 4's does not have a gas port.

A Bruno model 4 target rifle manufactured in 1958 had dual extractors, whereas an Anschutz model 1413 super match manufactured in 1963 did not. Anschutz did not introduce dual extractors until much later, although I am not sure if a 1949 model 1 Bruno had dual extractors.

Owning an Anschutz is about prestige and glamour and they have spent alot of money indoctrinating the shooting fraternity that there rifles are better.

In my opinion the Bruno's have the superior action.

Personally I think you would be better with a Bruno (either model 1 or 2) and over time have it refitted with a heavy match grade barrel and set in a new stock (perhaps the McMillan silhouette thumb hole that was modeled from Anschutz). You may be able to find a model 3 or 4 Bruno, however they are becoming a rare find.

Savage were once the importer for Anschutz in the United States and they also make a silhouette rifle (900s) that is a copy of the Anschutz 54-18 silhouette match rifle (they are about a third of the asking price of the Anschutz).

Failing that there is the Izhmash silhouette, there was a guy on this forum (killbz) that has one and it shoots!

Hey fellas, well I'm not seeing too many positive responses for the Striling, but I suppose all in all I'm not too suprised about that. I have seen another Voere model 70 advertised for a pretty decent price so I'm even tempted by that, dads old one used to shoot pretty well. I'll have a bit of a look out at my local range sometime soon and see whats going on out there. When I last shot out there, there was a mixture of hunter class and dedicated silhouette rifles all in the one category, pleanty of Brnos, a few Norincos, my Voere, some Annies and whatever else turned up. Guess first things first I'll go and have a look about, but at the end of the day I'm only in it for a bit of fun and its more plinking to me than serious competition.
