I haven't heard mention of this for some time. Is there a good size field expected? I'm intending to drive for 5-6 hrs to get there, so want to make sure the trip won't be wasted.

Rinso,
Sounds good. I'm there to learn so need shooters like yourself and Dave to explain how it all works. Looking forward to giving it a bash.

Alan,
But will see you there and happy to welcome a new shooter.
adonn,
Now thats a question that could run a few pages but I will give you what I think.
There is no singular most popular calibre in 1000yd BR which is IMHO one the attractions (that is to say you can't just buy X calibre and be in it you have to use your brian and think about it)
Calibres I have seen used at 1k in Australia include
223
243
6BR
6 Dasher
6 BRDX
6x47 Lapua
6.5x47 Lapua
6.5x55AI
6.5x57
6.5-284
270
280AI
7mm Rem Mag
7mm STW
7mm Boo Boo (Jacko)
7mm Redneck
308
30.06
30.06AI
300WSM
300 Win Mag
338 Lapua Mag
308 Baer
30-04
300 Yogi
30 Redneck
I have named a few certainly not all.
The great divide between Light Gun and Heavy Gun is determined by recoil. That is to say how much recoil can you reasonably tolerate whilst maintaing good bench technique.
The dividing line seems to be around the 30.06 area for recoil so all the 6mm's, 6.5's and smaller 7mm's and 30 cals ie 308 & 30.06 fall into LG with the 280AI & 30.06AI being about the limit IMO for a LG. All the rest land in Heavy Gun where the extra weight allows you to shoot them.
If I was building a new Heavy Gun I would be looking at the 300 Ackley, Win Mag, Yogi or Boo Boo (I would not consider 7mm but thats a personal preference) in 7mm STW, Yogi or Boo Boo.
If a Light Gun the 6x47 Lapua is my choice with the 6 Dasher or BRDX close behind. The 6.5x55AI & 6.5-284 are also worth looking at.
All that said the humble 308 will do a good job if driven well.
cheers

Re: ACT 1000yd May 25
There's usually a decent sized turnout for the 1K shoots. A bare minimum of 10 shooters in most cases. Sometimes get over 30 after Fly shoots.
Always a good days shooting in any case.
As for the caliber choice, if I was building a new gun, it would probably be another light gun, and I've heard a braked 300 Ackley can be interesting there....

Macca,
I just don't like the 7mm's. Over the years I have had a few in 7mm Rem Mag, 7-08 and I just could not get them to work to my satisfaction. That does not mean they wont work, I just coudn't be bothered with them when there are so many good options in 30 cal.
cheers

Fair enough Rinso. Now you have me worried about thaty 284 rifle.
I suppose a 6x47l rebarrel would fix it.
Good luck to all you blokes at Canberra.

Re: ACT 1000yd May 25
macca,
Just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for you. Jacko Bending has done some great things with the 7mm as have the Townsville boys and Ian Davis won in Melbourne the other week with a 7mm.
Maybe I am just not smart enough to put it all together.
cheers
