Sunday Fly shoots
We had a top day at Hornsby, blue sky and hardly no wind.--- how did the boys go at Little River ? Karl Kuen shot 4 flys, the way he kills flies,we are going to nickname him " Mortein ".
Once again, the top 2 spots were taken with light guns.
Cheers Malcolm

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
G'Day all,
even though I did the scoring for the 500m fly we were flat out all day but others did the final placings about all I can recall was Ian Davis took out the over all, several scores were up around 250 in HG, and Ross hutchins took out LG with around 220 and was a clear winner from PVM. I forgot my camera to take a piccy of the score sheet
SC, jugs, had placings and the small group was Ian Davis with a 1.6" group, with several around 1.8"
Our favourite Nimrod TrevT went from strength to strength and as a relative newbie to comp's I can say he did pretty good considering. AI also had some good looking groups with his pop gun. Jugs shot a fast group from AI's rifle to deliver a group about 0.75" high and was 3shots plus 2 which if the wind was the same would easily have printed a 5 shotter less than an inch, it measured around 2" from memory.......
Around 27 shooters, 13 in LG in one detail and 14 in HG in the other detail.
The weather was pretty good considering it was Lt river! but some got hit by bad vertical when the wind died off in the aftenoon sometimes around 8" or so.
So that's the scores and place getters as I can recall, as soon as i get results or PVM posts them you'll see 'em!
Cheerio Ned

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
I stuffed 2 targets. Like I mean stuffed. First was because the guy sharing the bench decided the newbie needed wind reading help and was trying to call my shots for me, 7 points. My fault, I let him. As the experienced guys said, you do that in practice, not competition. Another lesson learned.
Second target a PB 37. 3rd target a poor 24 but then the condition change had everyone scratching their heads and AI scored the same, some consolation.
Fourth target, disaster. We had a laugh at Ned on our informal get together when he missed putting a primer in one of his fireforming loads. Well I managed to do it in 2 of the rounds for the comp. Must have got a grain of powder on the bolt face casue the extractor couldnt grip and I had to run for the cleaning rod. I assumed wrongly that I had stuck my dummy round in the ammo box and loaded the next without checking. Same result. Lucky the squashed powder grain fell out when I got this one out the same way. One sighter left and next to no time, panic, bang bang bang bang quickly and a miserable 19.
Right now I am thinking how much can I get for this BAT actioned rifle because this seems beyond me.
Last target, 43.1. A 3 inch and a bit group and last shot of the day a fly. Enough to hook me into to believing I may be able to do this and lets turn up again for another go.
I didnt go expecting to win but I sure must have a hidden (well not very deep) competitive streak as those 2 really poor targets pissed me off a whole lot and the 43.1 was a bit of a high. I went to exceed my PB score. Well I failed by four points (this was my third 500m fly) but two individual targets exceeded previous individula target bests.
You learn something every time. Next time I will go with the mindset that I am there to compete and see what happens. 3 should be enough to learn.
Thanks for the words of encouragement Ned.

G'Day Trev,
just remember you are only as good as you last target!
And think how much more experienced you are now than your last shoot.......seriously ALL competition shooters started out just like you, stuff ups, unexplained shots, missed reading the wind etc, etc,
The trick is with us who've been there dun that is we still make those mistakes, but they're not quite as spectacular as the first time we made them!
Hang in there champ we know your good for it!

Mate
I shot pretty ordinary, but you cant post great scores everytime.
From memory, I shot 42.1, 50, 13, 24, 51.1
The 3rd and 4th targets, the condition had me fucked.... I can not explain, and will not even try. I got burnt!!! Change of condition, the flags died down, but the horizontal got worse....?????
5th target came in at 1.823"... which was machine gunned on this condition that got me eariler.
Trevort, just shoot more at 500m, and it will come together!
I had heaps of fun.. was a great day!
Cheers

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
I have to say the Fly shoot at Hornsby was fantasitc and it was a magic day for beginners like me
I went along not to be competitive but for an excuse to get the swede out and had never shot anything at 500 meters before. Was shooting my sporterised mauser with bipod and rear bag. First thing I noticed was my old Tasco 3-9x silver pronghorn just didn't cut the mustard there's a surprise, couldn't even see the scoring rings let alone the fly in the centre.
But was on the fly target with my first shot after cranking the elevation up but pitty we had some newb's in the butts and they weren't marking the warm up correctly. so took me till my 3rd detail to really know where they were going, as was shooting high.
Anyway last 2 targets weren't too bad had some scores in the 10's and one 3 shot group that was quite good hahaha (yes its meant to be 5). Missed the fly on the last target by about 1mm but nice to get 1 in the 10 ring.
All in all was chuffed at how the hunting rig performed with some decent optics would have been alot better, more resolution needed. Was using 140gr sst's so if it was a pig he'd be in trouble maybe. I know i was not competitive but the experience is worth it and was just a tops day.
Now can't wait to get my Omark and a scope

stinkitup,
Great work mate .. I have been telling the blokes here that even with a hunting rig just turning up and shooting is great fun at a Fly match.
Glad you had a good time.
cheers

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
it was great to meet "stinkitup" and his Dad. You are so right Rinso, these old 100 year old 6.5's still shoot.
Smallest group on Sunday at Hornsby was a 1.5 " group shot with a 240 Weatherby.
Two shooters decided to use the "belly flop " method------ to each their own, I guess.

Yeah thanks Rinso it was just a great time, one of the belly floppers was actually my Bro too Malcolm or known as Klicker here. He's a regular F Classer at Hornsby so was confortable with lying in the grass. He a lucky bastard, the club has a Left handed Barnard that he has been using and doing quite well although he needs to work on his loads using alot of old military brass which seems to be all over the place. Guess he got lucky being a lefty.

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
Although there were some administration and management errors the recent Fly shoot at Hornsby was a good day.
I had some problems with elevation in my scope, we had decided to utilise heavier projectiles with a greater ballistic co-efficiency in the 6mm.
I had to aim at the center of the writing at top of the target. After the event it was found there was not enough charge in the case, the load was taken from uncle Harvey's manual and we found that it was only luke warm, even though it stated that it was a maximum load.
At the next event I should be back on target. Has anyone any details in regard to the next shoot at Bateman's Bay? I had heard that it was re-scheduled, there were no details in the latest shooters journal.
Stinkitup,
I was out at HPGS the other day and had a look at some new scopes manufactured by counter sniper, they are a military scope with military reticles, the optics are very clear and they are very affordable, after 20 minutes of searching the darkest corners of HPGS if they had not have found the Pecar that I had on lay bye I would have purchased one of these scopes.
Hope to see you at the next shoot.

Hi Sean
Thanks mate I have seen HPGS advertise the scopes but didn't know much about them might have to go and check them out some time.
Hope you get your charges right for next time too mate.
Sorry Rinso don't know if where the results are

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
I have emailed a fellow who has a little to do with Hornsby, re the results. I have asked him to forward the results onto the ACT website,
as yet no luck, For the sake of the shooters at the last Hornsby shoot, I will get in touch with Dave Waters and see if he can sort things out.

Re: Sunday Fly shoots
Being as I am only about 1/4 of the way through sanding the new stock for my "new" 308 (only about 200 more hours to go ) I might be a bit early in asking but who organises these here fly shoots and where does one find out about them?
I have to say they sound interesting....
I guess I should also ask about the technical regs, weights, triggers etc - where can I find this info?
TIA
