Question for TonyZ, a.JR or anyone else that cares to reply

In one of the other posts in this forum you guys mention resizing 9.3x62 Lapua brass to 30-06. Is this because Lapua put more care into its construction and therefore greater case life or are there other reasons behind your choice?
Thanks fellas

Hi Dr G
I am using the 9.3 brass necked down to 30 cal and Tony Z and Eric here in TSV are using it in their 7 mils…… and there is a bloke down south starting to build a 7mm using this brass too
The reason a number of us are using the 9.3 brass is because as a factory cartridge if you look at the specs it runs pretty high pressures and requires good quality brass to do so. This as a result makes the brass ideal for using as it can be pushed pretty hard without suffering.
I know I am pushing my brass fairly hard and there is no work in keeping in going. A recent measure of my cases for concentricity barely showed a quarter of a thou movement anywhere on the cases after 12 firings and they only had their first shoulder bump after 10.
Eric recently swapped over from 284 brass and you cannot keep the smile off his face with how little he has to do in keeping it going compared to 284 brass he was using.

Thanks Al for the prompt reply. Are you guys just necking down to 30 cal making a straight up 30-06 case or is it bigger/improved (ie 30-06AI) and in necking down is it simply a mater of full length sizing in a 30-06 die or are their intermediate steps or custom dies involved.
Please excuse my questions if they seem a bit obvious but I am only just getting into the reloading side of shooting.
thanks again

I simply kneck straight down to 30 cal and making a cartridge very similar to the 06 improved. I do this in my bump die (your FLS die), run them over an expander button, neck turn them and then fireform the case.
I am not sure how many steps the 7 mils guys take to neck down the cases, Tony may be able to tell you that one.

thanks Al it is the 30 cal I am interested in. When I rebarrel my 30-06 I want to do it as a 30-06AI or similar. I want to do this for a couple of reasons, one I can still use factory ammo as a fall back when culling camels and two to give some extra grunt to 180gn pills with reloads. From what i have been told most 30-06 factory loads are loaded with pretty mild charges for use in older ex military rifles but that my tikka t3 should be able to handle heavier charged handloads.
Based on the extended life of the resized 9.3 brass it might be worth looking at using it once the rebarrel has taken place.
thanks mate, much appreciated

Gidday Dr G, when you rebarrel your rifle, why not rebarrel to 9.3x 62 ? If you are after more grunt for camels--9.3x62 is the way to go. If you went down the 30/06 AI road you will be up for new dies anyway, so a set of 9.3x62 are cheaper than the AI set.
If metric is not your thing--rebarrel to 35 Whelan or 338/06
Cheers Malcolm

Dammit Malcom dont be putting thoughts into my head
seriously though the reason i was thinking of a 30-06AI was because I could always fall back to factory ammo. I was talking to a bloke on friday who has shot more than 1200 camels from his doorstep over the last 12months and over 3000 for the whole property. He uses two 30-06 rifles and swaps them as the barrel heats up. This bloke has a real large feral problem (scuse the pun) and is probably one of the worst effected properties in Australia.

Then again the 30.06AI is not far behind a 300 Win Mag which I am certain has enough stopping power and you can get brass and projectiles anywhere.
cheers

I only met the bloke on friday. will see what eventuates over the next few months. Thing is he may be in a prime position as a trial site for the camel management program. Hope so for his sake.
Anyway this has got a bit to off topic for this forum.
