Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
Well I don't know much (as shown by my score) but Jagen Peet (Juggs) won both Light gun and Overall with a 237 shooting a 6.5-284 built by Shane Clancy, well done Juggs.
Peter Van Muers won Heavy gun shooting a 6 mm Dasher with about 235 I think.
Murray Hicks (Muz) also chimed in with a 2nd or 3rd in Light gun, not sure of the score.
Trevort shot a reasonable score with his shiny new 6.5-284 and had a good time (I think) although he sooked a lot about being picked on. Kerry (the woman that has kept trev away from the forum) came for a look and I think managed to keep trev's mind off shooting and on other things. She is very nice trev, well done .. still dont know what will happen when she gets the seeing eye dog back though.
Malcolm, Shane Clancy and I made up numbers.
Peter Van Muers backed up to win LG at 1k on Sunday with a group agg of 278.5mm from Dave Goodridge (dave g) who agg'ed 279mm, so 0.5 mm between them at 1k. Pete also won LG score.
Jacko Bending won HG Group agg I don't recall who won HG score. Jacko held up the HG's at thye Fly as well with a 3rd overall and 2nd in HG.
If any of this is wrong feel free to correct me as I am working off memory.
cheers

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
I went hoping to learn more and enjoy my first comp with my own rifle. i learnt more (ammo prep and bags come to mind). I hoped to beat Napisan and I hoped to improve my first score (99 last year)
I scored 134.1, 14th out of 33 in LG and beat Napisan! i now own a fly patch, I learned more about my gun and how to shoot and hope to keep improving. I wasn't happy with my ammo prep as it was rushed.
i learned that new cases should be sized first (two wouldnt chamber) and I also learned do not unchamber a round in a record score. I was about to fire a record shot when Rinso suggested going back to the plate as the wind had changed a slight amount. I didnt have proper ammo boxes (two sizes bought and didnt fit) so the rounds were stored point down and some deformation was occuring to the meplats. I was using the better ones on target and the worse on the sighters so i went to unload a target shot and replace with a sighter. I got a projie in the chamber and powder in the action. Rinso might give me a bit of a hard time but mates are there when you need them and he helped get me back up in time to get the remaining shots on paper before the time expired. Thanks mate.
At the 1000yd I learned that I cant read mirage. The flags were fluttering in no particular direction on my first target so didnt tell me anything and I couldnt get much from the mirage. My scope ran out of adjustment just short so i was aiming at the dirt above the target frame. Cause I wanted to start fresh next comp with properly sorted ammo from fireformed cases i entered into HG class to fire more shots. 73 on the first target was fairly ordinary.
On the second target i started to get into a rythmn of actually operating the equipment properly. The gun started to feel part of me instead of me groping all over it looking for a comfortable repeatable hold. I also got some wind that kept the flags moving so i could have an indication of when to pull the trigger. I got confident enough with my hold to keep my head off the stock and eyes on the flags with the butt just touching my shoulder and let off sometimes without even looking thru the scope.
I had to apologise to the girlfriend for being so grumpy after the first target but 92.1 on the second had me absolutely stoked. Not record breaking by any stretch of the imagination but came in 8th out of 19 in heavy gun for score. It felt like a bit of adrenaline and I am truly hooked big time on this long range stuff.
Some one reading some of the stuff in this section might think there are a grumpy bunch at target matches but one of the best things I have found is friendship and cameraderie. There are people who want to win but not at the expensive of helping others ( and one who ripped up his targets and kicked the bin after he dumped them in!). I had another great weekend and would recommend any shooters who like accuracy to give it a go.
And once again thanks to Rinso who convinced me to enter my first comp, thanks to Shane for lending me a rifle to try it first, thanks to many others like Jugs for helping me get the rifle on paper at the only sight in sesion I could get to before the comp etc etc etc

I didnt actually witness that incident so maybe shouldnt name names but apparently he's famous for his antics and has been reminded of rule 10 in the past.

Great stuff Trev. One day when I move closer to a range I am going to give the LR stuff a go. Until then I will keep practicing on things that meow. Congratulations to all that took part from the outside looking in Long Range Benchrest is a bit like a marathon or triathalon, just being in it makes you a winner.

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
Well done to all the guys, some great shooting.
Nothing special from me at 500 on saturday ended around the middle of the pack.
But on sunday i landed first for the heavy gun score ( 188.1 from memory) so i was the one you forgot Rinso!! and i think about 2nd or 3rd for group.
It was as usual a great weekend.
cheers,
Shane

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
Saturday, not too bad. 3rd in LG
Sundays first target was the worst target I have ever shot by a long way. Had to happen eventually though.
Looked like they woulda grouped ok though. Second target was a touch under 8". Bleh.
There's always next time.

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
I dragged my nephew, Sean along. He was shooting the Clancy rechambered 243 Win. It's now a 6mm x 284, spitting 90 Lapuas at 3200 fps.
He is now, well and truely hooked, so I now may have a bit of company at these shoots.
I think Trevort performed well under pressure when he had " mechanical " problems.
Did you see that top 1.6" group in the warm ups.
Malcolm

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
Trev this may seem like a silly question but how did you run out of elevation in your scope at 1000...... You've got a 20moa rail in don't you??

Re: So how did you guys go at canberra??
the mounts supplied were supposed to get it there, they will be changed at no cost to me. Since i wont be shooting 1000yds again to the next Canberra shoot in Sept I will hold onto it until they are in stock.
