Hunter Valley Target Shooting Clubs?

Post by seantheaussie »

G'day,
Are there any recommended target shooting clubs in the Hunter Valley? Scoped events interest me the most & I guess I should try them in order of ammo cost leaving more money for great guns.
Thanks

Hi,

There are not a lot to choose from in the area.

There is the SSAA branch at Seaham, which only open Saturdays for Centrefire and every second Sunday for Rimfire. The range calendar is found at http://www.colgarv.com.au/SSAA/Newcal08.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You need to get there early as it is always packed

There is also the Cessnock Fullbore club who shoot Saturday afternoons from Noon.

Around Newcastle you have the Smallbore club at Waratah and a small club at Tenambit (East Maitland area) they do shoot benchrest rimfire which is developing a following. but i am not 100% sure of times Waratah is open Wednesday afternoons from memory.

Other than that i have heard of a small range in the Aberdeen area but that is all i know of...

Good luck

I think they shoot F-Class at Cessnock as well as fullbore, not confirmed yet. Also Cessnock is open on wed afternoons for casual shoot from midday at 100m's get in early not because its busy but once they are finished they close her up again. Usually friendly out there and interested in what your shooting. Just don't expect it to be open still when you rock up at 4pm. Cost is $5 for ssaa members on wed too.

The smallbore at tenambit (east maitland) is open saturdays from 2pm I think and is $8

Unfortuanetly been way to busy with other commitments to get out but hopefully will change soon.

Also there is a clays club Cessnock, on the road between cessnock and weston,

Hope that helps

Perhaps we should organise a Hunter Valley AV get together 8)

I have a couple of responses to emails
Newcastle Smallbore and Air Rifle Club.

Range Location.

The range is located at the end of Eldon Street, Waratah West

Come through the gate at the end of the street; go past the Archery & Pistol Club. At the end of the track you will see a green shipping container, which is our office, make yourself known and on a Saturday ask for me, John Last, or on Wednesdays ask for John Williams or Paul Clarke.

Range Hours.

The Range is open as follows.

Wednesday 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Saturday 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Events Shot

Prone 50 meters

3 Position 50 meters

Bench Rest 50 meters

Silhouette 50 meters

Air Rifle 10 meters

Costs.

Club fees are $100.00 / calendar year. (Payable December each year)

Range fee: $5.00 daily

Targets: $0.50 each

Ammunition: $4.20/ 50) to $12.00/50 rounds (bullets)

You can use your own ammunition BUT it shall be Standard (low), velocity.

I hope that this information is enough to get you started.

Cheers

Thank you for your enquiry and I will try to answer your questions as Secretary of Newcastle Technical College Rifle Club Incorporated.

Our Club is a low cost Club with approvals for Target Shooting, Hunting and Collecting.

We do not have our own range or clubhouse/meeting rooms.

Yes, we can train & test for R Licences (you must have a Firearms Licence first with the right reasons - Target and Hunting if you want to do both)

We shoot competition at Cessnock (Fullbore) and practice/compete at Newtec Pistol Club - Teralba (Smallbore) and Newcastle Smallbore and Air Rifle Club - Waratah (Smallbore & Air Rifle)

Membership is currently $60 for new members and then $50 per year due 1st July each following year. (Fullbore affiliation is an extra $100pa if shooting fullbore)

All clubs do what they can to assist beginners, including loan rifles (small fee per use possibly).

Practise is limited to the times the range is open. Waratah & Teralba are open Wednesdays and Saturdays for certain times. Cessnock is open for practise on Wednesdays.

Silhouette competitions are not held but we do have a smallbore event on the 3rd Sunday morning each month at Teralba which includes some silhouette targets.

If you are interested in joining our Club or just seeing what goes on, we are at Waratah (Eldon Street - in quarry) on Wednesday evenings (come about 6pm) and Teralba (Rhondda Road) on Wednesday mornings (come about 10am) or 3rd Sunday (10am). Cessnock Rifle Range 1 to 3pm Saturdays.

I trust this is of some assistance.

I wish SSAA grouped its 2 monthly rimfire benchrest on one day & rimfire silhouette & field on another.
I wish Newcastle Smallbore and Air Rifle Club used scopes.
Perhaps we should organise a Hunter Valley AV get together 8)
It does seem like our numbers are getting up there.

Just to confirm Cessnock fullbore range does also shoot F Class at the same time as fullbore Saturdays. They welcome visitors and you can shoot for a minimal fee (~$10) 3 times before you have to join a club. There are a number of clubs that share the range but they all shoot fullbore at 12:00 Saturdays. the SSAA and military rifle guys also shoot there but i don't know exact times, Wednesday arvo does ring a bell...

Oh .. I forgot to mention the Germania Club at Warners Bay has a 10m Air Rifle range out the back i think they have about 25 lanes. They only shoot 10m but it's not a bad setup, they usually shoot Tuesday and Friday nights from 7:00. but check with the club as numbers have been dwindling a bit and they aren't always open on those nights.

a quick word of warning ... Don't mention the Germania club if your at Waratah Small bore and vice versa - some history there apparently. wouldn't want you walking into that one and getting caught in the crossfire...

Thanks Muz. They certainly do a bloody good job in hiding their rifle range. I hadn't heard a peep about it. They seem to only shoot 6:30 tue according to their website. I've sent an email asking about costs & events.

The military guys shoot most Saturday mornings on Cessnock range. Start time is 0800. Scoped rifles are most welcome and users shoot against themselves. It's always a novelty when an iron sighted military rifle beats a scoped rifle.
