Last 1000yd at Canberra for 2007

Well the last Canberra 1000yd match for the year is over. A small but dedicated group attended what was another well organsied and very social day.
Canberra which had just turned on 3 days of typical Canberra conditions for the Queens event managed to save a little for us as well.
The clearest indictor of conditions I can give would be to describe the course of one detail ..

which after the sighter period saw a whole detail go to the 10 minute record target thinking they had it wired ..

The "insert bolts and commence fire" order was given by the range officer and this was followed by 6 minutes of utter silence as the flags and mirage turned tail and went the complete opposite direction to which it had gone all morning.

Then with 4 minutes remaining it was a case of suck it and see because things were not changing back at all and if anything were getting further away from the sighter period condition.

Either way a good day was had by all with the winners being ..

LG Group Jim Cliffordwith an 8.9 agg
and suprise suprise Dave Goodridge took score with 94.1 and single high target with 48.1
LG small group Jim Clifford with an 8.24

HG group was again Jim Clifford with 18.87 agg and Jim picked up score with 179.3 and single high score of 90.2
HG small group Dave Purcell 10.06 (if I had not slipped 2 off the right side of the target by 1/2 inch I might have done better overall .. a tribute to my wind reading ability)

So Jim Clifford was offically voted off the next shoot for hogging all the prizes .. no really great effort Jim in trying conditions.

Special mention to Mick Easton for finally getting the vertical out and nailing a target (only 2 inches of vertical).

Well next 1000yd looks like being the 9th March 2008 after the Fed Cup Fly shoot. I must say its been a pleasure shooting with you all .. See you all next season.

a very happy and social day was had by all.

good to see bob pedersen from tasmania attending again.

the young fellahs, ethan and decklan did extremely well and gained valuable experience in some very weird and challenging conditions.

who says you can't experience 5-7 knot northerly breezes and have the mirage appear to be running equally as strong from the south !!!!

yep, that's CANBERRA for you.

Rinso, I've had help and encouragement from others (notably thanks to Shane) but the big thank you must go to you for introducing me to the sport, SOOOOO THANK YOU

PS i paid Shane the outstanding for my PPC and the whole lot for the BAT actioned 6.5 284 on Saturday. Needed to use two credit cards as not enough limit on one , bloody hope I can operate these things!

Mate I will say here and now ... thank you.. your a genuinely good bloke and I will enjoy your company at matches for many years I hope. I can only say that I really hope you get everything you want from the sport as I am sure the sport will get plenty from you.

Was another good day, as with pretty much any day you get to shoot the 1K.

I got the SOTY stuff sent to me today. Congrats to Dave Goodridge on taking out SOTY in light, and Dave Groves for heavy. I'll put the complete results on my website tonight.

I'm pretty happy with taking second in light too. I'll catch dg one of these days.

I was wondering that if David G set the heighest score then it maybe implies that marked shooting has a good advantage over blind shooting even though its slower? Or is it that for tricky days picking through the condition is probably the way to go and rapid shooting blind is better for easy days?

Is that a fair assumption or is there more to it?

well that record was short lived, a big congrates to Dave G for resetting the Aussie light gun score record, well done mate. hope you can make it up this way in July for our big one, i'll really have to pull my finger out for the 08 season to beet that.

thanks for the reply. Me thinks though that the fast blind shooting does appear to produce smaller groups but spotted shooting appears to produce higher scores. So whats more important score or group?
It seems that S.O.T.Y. is awarded for score or is there also a S.O.T.Y. for group?

The blind shooters employ all styles mate not just fast. As a matter of fact Dave Goodridge shoots blind and does not shoot fast by any streech of the imagination .. he is the LG SOTY so there you go.
in fact have a read of this old post where Dave describes a shoot. Full of good info.

I also think you will find that blind shooters hold all the records for both group and score.

I would not be too upset mate its a great effort to even get close to dg .. he is one of the best in the business mate.
