Busselton 1000yd BR 15.2.15

Post by Brad Y »

With our pre booked fixture cancelled due to the Defence Force using the range, we had an impromptu make up shoot after a 500m F Class shoot this afternoon.

7 Shooters stayed for the shoot, on paper targets which was a fresh change from electronic targets that we shot on last year. We plan to use paper throughout the year now to bring our results up to being recognised across Aus and the USA.

Conditions were tricky, with fickle switching mirage- sometimes quite strong then dropping off within a second or two, then coming back at half the previous value. Most shooters had good groups that were ruined by a flier due to a pickup or dropoff. While marking I noted a change in direction between the sighter and score periods and who ever I was marking had 3 shots blown clean off the target due to the direction change.

Brad Day with his barnard 6.5x47L shot the days small group of 7.2 inches in his second detail which was consistent enough with his first group to also take out the daily group aggregate. Matt Lewis shot the days best score of 42.0 with his 308 off a bipod! I was confident of giving the group aggregate/small group a good nudge today after a first group of 8.5 inches however 3 shots into rattling down my last detail the mirage stopped as I shot and later found out the shot went way across the other side of the target. However was happy to center the little dasher well enough for the score aggregate for the day.

Looking forward to the next fixture!

Well done Busselton.
It's great to see your group participating in 1000 yard BR, and it can only lead to better results in all of the other shooting that you do.
It's amazing how intimidating it can be for a shooter, until they have tried it.
And it's just as amazing how satisfying it can be to shoot any sort of group at that distance !

Well done Brad and co. Those changes in conditions are what make it so challenging when your not getting feed back to the end.
Keep up the good work. That dasher will have it's day.
Cheers

That getting no feedback til its radioed through at the end is really addictive! I was cocky as hell after my sighters before the second group. Beautiful and flat just to the left of the white square. Probably to the point where I didnt want to notice the mirage change!

brad

yeah mate, all good news !!!!!!!!!

i assume that this will be the Busselton clubs first full entry for the 2015 ExtraVision-Optimus Projectiles International Postal matches.

the 308 shooters will naturally be entered in the Light Gun Class and the Optimus Trophy.

can't help but agree with your comments on the challenge of "shooting blind" - no other from of LRBR can compare to IBS 1000yd BR

cheers
dave

PS -did you get the opportunity to take a few pictures for general viewing and the ATR ?

Dave got a couple yes, nothing great as I spent the first half of the arvo pulling targets then the second half shooting. Will email them through tonight.

Hi , Congratulations to you and the rest of the West OZ guys on getting to know 1000yd BR .. The conditions offered on the day are always the final contributing factor , but if you stay with it at sometime in the future things will fall into place .. These times are one's remembered for a long time .. Especially by the older guys like me , i can still recall a target at my home range in approx 2011 when it was superior to run the group slowly (about 40 secs in H/G) as the site picture was great for all 10.. The group only went 5.0 and a 98 but i thought the barrel only had a 5.60 left in at that stage of life .. Hope to read more from your group in the future..JR..Jeff Rogers
