Alright , If you were going to build a new 1000yd bench gun what cartridge would you pick depending on which class.. Or would you build one gun/cartridge and shoot it in both L/G and H/G .. Answers like 17 hmr are not needed or wanted ,real stuff please..JR.. Jeff Rogers

Well I suppose it is relevant, just finishing putting it together 6.5x55AI for bench 1000/fly and fopen. If I can get it under 17lb will shoot both when possible but its over 17 at the moment so will just have to shoot heavy :?

Heavy Gun would be between 300 Ackley and 7mm Jacko
Light Gun would be one of either 6BRX, 6x47 Lapua or 6XC

I'm trying to source a decent action at the moment to build a 300 Ackley for LG. Anybody got anything nice for sale in LPRBRE? Or LPRBDP that will fit the 300 winmag case?

A brake is being fitted to my new 6 Dasher light gun at the moment, but I,m also thinking about trying a 6.5 WSSM or 284 Shehane.

My ideal heavy gun would be a 300 WSM and a few in my area are talking about getting one together.

Hi Rod . From my prospective most of my matches are going to be at home , with that in mind our home range gives hell to the fast twists in the vertical .. In fact i would not ever again run anything faster than a 1 in 10 twist and at present i run a 13.5 in which every now and then it works OK .. I think a 300 wsm might be needed in Townsville, starting with 3 barrels, a 10.0 / 10.5 and a 11.0 twist.. JR.. Jeff Rogers

Jeff,

What bullet would you run? The lose of velocity for you to go to WSM from Redneck with a BIB would put you more than ever at the mercy of the wind, I would think you could lose 150fps. Are you looking to start shooting the fabled Berger 210? I have 3 boxes here that you could get started with!! I think you need to look at the projectile first. I know someone who has some other 210's who might be persuaded to part with some for an exorbidant fee. Having said that, there seems to be a resurgence in the quality of the Hornady offerings, certainly Jack is havings some success, and the 208 match I shot last 500 went well.

I did a few sums, the 210 Ber with Dave Tooley's call on real world BC of .630 against the BIB of .525 from the same instruments not some guru's book of Revelation, volume 65c.. Now take a speed that the 210 / WSM wants to run at of approx 2850fps and my current speed of the 300 Redneck at 3350 fps .. And you get a 10 mph drift of 70.7ins for my current set up and a drift of 70.8ins for the 300 WSM , so Fu.. all really.. That takes in a constant wind of 10 mph which we know is never really there but it's not going to be too far behind even though the Time of Flite will be approx 13 percent slower .. 2 guys that know their stuff in the US have said they would select me a quantity of the right batch nos of 210s if i go ahead with it , so bullets are no prob.. It would have to be a complete new gun as i have not given up on the present one .. Probably just dreamin..JR.. Jeff Rogers

Always worth thinking about.

JR,

You could always just start with a switch barrel for what you already have. Bolt face won't be an issue, just the action will be a little long.

I am watching this thread with interest as I am .........................................at some stage having a 17LB'er built up,it will be for our saturday F class fun shoots,Fly,and what ever else I decide to have a go at so the more classes it fits then the more trigger time I get.Stuff I have is ,I got a stock from Rinso ages ago..........not sure of the make but its laminated timber, old T36 Weaver,Jewel trigger,Stiller Python RBLP with 20moa rings.
Now I have a couple of new barrels, one is a Kreiger 1:8,6mm,LV taper and as I found out..........................wont fit as it is 1.200 at the chamber end and I need a min of 1.250..damn!!!!!!!,the other is a Brux 1:8,HV that will finish at 32" ,and is 1.250 so that one is fine.
I have 6BR dies and all the asorted bits and bobs but I am not locked into the 6mm either though I have been thinking 6BRX............................what should I be building and what cartridge should I be looking at.
Sorry for the hijack a.JR.

Regards Chris.

The 6 Dasher will help with a bit more velocity for 1000yds, but will mean some new dies, no real problem.
