284 win has good selection of projectiles as does the 6.5x47.
The 284 kicks a wee bit more but at competition weights its pretty mild.
I prefer the 7mm in shitty wind but the 6.5x47 is getting some pretty good results in f open.
The 7mm's are the preferred poison of most of the top F open shooters and are dominating the queens at the longs.
cheers

Seems lots of people are using the 6.5 in the shorts out to 600 or so then using the 284 in the longs or if its ugly. For dedicated 800-1000 work I would be going a 284W with 180 hybrids. Just make sure you get a barrel with suitable twist to shoot the heavies. Also the 7mm's apparently torque a bit if you dont have a decent front bag setup. The 6.5's are very mild to shoot and down right awesomely accurate. Shot this on sunday- no the best Ive seen it shoot but Im not the best at picking up the pickup and dropoffs when the wind comes from behind me. First shot was a high 4, second is the shot on the far left both sighters (wish I hit the cut sighters button to clear them off the screen)- just scraped the third one onto the line enough (first scoring shot) to be counted as a 6, 4th one must have been on the same condition as it dropped off then it was hammer and tongs to get the rest of them all in there. 90.8 at 700m (15 shot string) Shot by me with a mates savage 6.5x47L and 120gr SMK's. Ive been thinking about a 6.5 for ages and this was the icing on the cake :D

No im in favour for the 284 for 800-1000yd stuff. But the 6.5 is a super sweet little round. Ive personally never used the 284 but seeing what guys over on the east coast are doing with theirs and looking at it on paper, its definitely got the goods.

What not just shoot it as a 308 in f standard? The 308 can shoot well and I know of one particular omark that humbles a lot of more expensive gear! And it doesn't have a full custom barrel just a black mountain, with prepped brass, good loading technique and shooting skills the 308 is definitely capable at the long ranges.

it needs a new barrel stink, and ive been reading up on long range target rifles.
these 2 cals seem to be top of the pops for this purpose.
if/when i can get it rebarrelled it will be a dedicated long ranger.
i have a full bore for the shorter stuff.

Fair enough then.

I have a 6.5x55 AI that is waiting for a stock. After being stuffed around have sourced another so will see how it goes before the end of the year.

I have a 6.5x47L that ive just aquired and shot my first match this weekend. Its an absolute lazer.
Shot a 300m fly match and managed a .715" group in pretty windy conditions. End of the month will be a 500m Fly shoot so cant wait to see what it will do.

I have been thinking of a straight 284win build for a while now, which will see me enter the world of f-class. Im pretty happy to use my 6.5 inside of 600yards, but i think the 284 will conquer from 600 onwards.

Id like to use the 175-180gr projectiles, can any guys on here confirm their loads using these bullets - if anyone is?
I know the guys in the states say they can shoot well with the heavy's and RL17.

OP, Go the 284 for sure.

Dont be scared to try the 6.5 with a good bullet at the longs too. There is no reason why it wouldnt beat a 284 at the longs on the right day and with the right driver.

The ballistics of the 130vld at 2950fps is impressive and the 140 hybrid at 2800fps is slightly better drift wise again. The 284 with 180 hybrids is better ballistically but your shooting the low accuracy node from reports so ballistics arent that far apart. To get the 2950 fps area you need a 284 shehane or larger case.

Well what about a 260AI running 123 Lapua's or 130 Berger's.
I found that it worked very well at al yardages out to and including 1000yds.
It will fit nicely on the Omark action.
As for performance its milder to shoot than the 284 and out performs the 6.5x47 Lapua.
I managed to get some good results with it in Benchrest including National smal group at 500M Fly of 1.2 inches and also managed some 4 & 5 inch groups in 1000yd BR.

If and when my 6.5x47L dies, i was thinking the 260ai or 260 SLR would be my next 6.5 round. I find this calibre still quite mild to shoot.

Got some good points there for you LoneRider, Mate have a look at the LR benchrest guys like TonyZ who seem to be able to shoot the 6br very well. In the states their are a lot of guys shooting 6br or similar. I'm not so sure it is specifically the calibre, but good shooters with good gear.
