As a bloke who knew 'Shorty' I can vouch for the man; and especially for his family. They have supported his favourite shooting sports since his early and greatly regretted passing; I still choke up when I think about him. He was a really easygoing bloke who could shoot like crazy, no BS about him; in fact his favouite motto was 'S$^t h@**$^s', and he lived up to the saying.
So, come on up north, enjoy the hospitality (and our ORRIBLE shooting conditions) and try to win a rifle!

Hey Wooby, i think you touched on something great there; there are a shit load of things for the ladies to do up here and i am sure they would have a great time if they came. 
They could do a trip to Maggie island on the Friday, hit the shops Saturday, check out the markets on Sunday morning and have lunch down the Strand then have a look at the Casino, Billabong and surrounds and on Monday arvo they can spend a lovelly afternoon cleaning their hubbies guns.
Seriouslly though, if the ladies want to organise something and are worried about getting around, i have a spare car they can use, it's a 96 VS wagon and all they need to do is put petrol in it.

It is a real credit to the Short family that since Peters' passing Merv and Wendy have put a rifle for every year since for either the Silhouette Champs or now the Fly. The same within the Towsville Pistol Club where every year they have put up prizes for their annual Short Memorial. I am sure that all that knew Pete and have picked up a rifle or two over past years would gladly give them back to still have Peter with us at a match. He is still missed by many after a lot of years abscence.

Big effort from Ian Davis just to get there.

aJR I am going to TRY to organise a few of us to come up next year .. travel together and save some dollars ... fingers crossed. I intend (at this stage) to go to the Brisbane Fly after the Madden so might see you there Jeff.

G'Day all,
well what a weekend, this Iron Man is very aptly named, it realy brings out the best shooters. As most of us know it's not a simple matter of holding a gun straight and pulling the trigger
. There are so many varriables to consider and i think when someone can put it all together over three days, three distances and a million different weather conditions it gives the rest of us something to aspire to.
Congrats to Bob N, Tony Z, Ian D and aJr, you guys over come some unreal odds to come up trumps for the weekend and trully deserve the label of "marksman".
It is also important to recognise the effort of the organisers, Jeff Rogers, Tony Zubal and our ever reliable scoreres June & Glenda, with out these people this weekend would not have happened. While recognising peoples efforts it is important to thank all the people that travelled so far to get here, we are a long way from everywhere up here and for people to travel hours and even days to get here is just fantastic.
In summerising i would like to say that any club that wants to put on a trully competitive shoot, the "iron man" is the way to go, i would love to see this shoot replicated through out Australia. This shoot has the ability to attract shooters from overseas and all over our country, so how about it guys; lobby your local club, talk to aJr & TZ, lets set up an Australian round of iron man comps with an annual final. This comp could do for shooting what the silicon chip did for computers.

I would like to say well done to Ian Davis in his first shoot in the North on a range he had never seen before. His 600 effort was especially good considering the crap conditions thrown at us. I have shot on our range for many years and i have never seen such strong winds that came from all points of the compass in such a short period of time. At one time there at the 1K, there were west, south west, south east and north west winds at 20 plus knots in the span of about 2 minutes whereby it created a whirlpool effect in the centre of the range.
The weekend was clear for those who wonder about caliber choice on a three range shoot. The 30's are always gunna be hard to beat in HG and i am still amazed at how Sierra can make their 200 SMK so consistant batch to batch. As for LG, the 6 mms got thrown around like rimfires, the sevens were there in force with four 284s and Ians 280 AI. Three of the 284s used 168 SMKs, and the 280 AI of Ian's was using the 168 Berger. Trevor Armstrong had the 175 SMKs in his 284 which much to my suprise did work quite well in the rough crap. Noaksie had his 284 and Sierra 168s working well as usual and took out the overall Iron Man LG with some very consistant scoring and grouping over the three days. Suprisingly the LG 30's did not do better overall with their 175 SMKs at 3K fps, allthough Bob L scorched a 219 in the Fly and was the man i had the money on to take out the Iron Man. I would have liked to see a couple of 6.5s turn up from the F Class fraternity to get a measure of their performance.
Lastly it was a bit of entertainment for us long timers to see a 7x47 and a 30 BR turn up to have a go at the three ranges. Bob M did do well in the Fly and posted a very tidy group with his 30 BR in the 600. But the 1K was not as forgiving as the shorter ranges with both really struggling to get on the ten foot square sighter board during the warmer period. I hope this doesn't scare them off but rather gets them to look at a better mousetrap.
Overall the gear on the line over the weekend was pretty standard with most change coming in stock and rest configurations. These changes are certainly giving their owners better aggs and are making the whole packages more user friendly. If this year was any indication, next year should show some real improvements in scores and groups aswell as aggs.
Hope to see some more of you in the North at our 2008 Iron Man.
