I have seen that IBS has changed the rules to allow muzzle brakes in Heavy Gun 1000yd class. How do things stand in Australia? Do we follow IBS rules? If so, are heavy guns allowed to use muzzle brakes here now?

Last I read, the NRA rules say that we refer to the IBS, which would mean that muzzle brakes are legal on heavy guns, although why you would want one eludes me. The rule change was brought about over there to facilitate light guns shooting in heavy gun class. If recoil is an issue, just make the gun heavier, mine has 9 kg of lead in the butt, amazing what a great muzzle brake that is, and allows you to balance the gun better IMHO.

Rod, I won't be shooting a heavy gun with a brake any time soon because the experiance with the best guns in the world is that there is a step back in accuracy .. I also won't be shooting a Light Gun in H/G because IMO that would be a step back as well .. Knowing the AUS 1k rules as they stand will also tell you that there is more chance of a cold day in hell than a brake being allowed in AUST at nearly all ranges that participate ..JR..Jeff Rogers..ps from a personal prospective ,i could care less if it allowed a guy to try out in heavy gun with a L/G,but it won't happen as some in control have a passionate dislike for Muzzle Brakes ,period

I was thinking of occaisionaly screwing a muzzle brake onto my 10kg F class gun with a few extra weights screwed on. I know it wouldnt be competitive in light conditions, but I was just after something to have fun with 4 times a year, which is how often I will be able to do 1000yd BR. A freind of mine with a 10kg 300WSM was hoping the same thing.

Until Wingham starts their 1000yd BR matches, I cant justify the expense of building a dedicated HG just yet.

Where my freind and I will be shooting (Dubbo/narromine) it is shot out in the open, so muzzle brakes are tolerated, though I wouldnt be suprised or offended if they shuffled us off to one end if we get too noisy.

There is also talk of permitting muzzle brakes in some F-Open Class shoots.

There are a lot of high recoil, match grade rifles out there with muzzle brakes, looking for somewhere to compete. It is only a matter of time until someone creates a class for these rifles and reaps the benefit of new club members.

No problems with muzzle brakes @ N-D. Rules have already been amended.

The contractors have almost finished the construction of the wind resistant fences.

The "Not having a vagina" comp is all that matters.

Jeeze Mick, I know of quite a few female shooters who regularly win competitions and could certainly kick my butt with a 308.

As for handling recoil, a 458 Lott was my favourite gun for a few years and I could even get a half decent group with it, not that I shot much paper with it.

For a target gun though, all manliness aside, I would always prefer less recoil if I could get it, makes gun handling less critical, upsets the bags less, you can concentrate more on the flags, less on the hold, quicker return to battery and less chance of deleloping a flinch.

What I was after is to win a small group or high score comp and not so worried about the big balls comp.

Guys , I have a copy of the rules implemented into the NRAA in 2008 covering the Australian 1000yd benchrest matchs .. Although i don't agree with the way the new rules were implemented and some of those same rules ,fact is they Are and have been in place for sometime now .. Even Townsville has adopted this rule book because the way it is written we can shoot the original way that things started in this country and those that want to can shoot F/class at a bench can do it also .. Now in that rule book officially sanctioned by the NRAA under rule 2/d it reads H/G (NO MUZZLE BRAKES ALLOWED ).. Unless the rules are to be changed by the NRAA then as i read it ,No you can't use a brake and shoot in an Australian match .. JR..Jeff Rogers

Yep - been on the next bench to the dreaded .338 Lapua, with a brake. Made me flinch a bit !

It's noisy, but it depends on the type of brake. Anything directing gasses backwards at all can be unpleasant.
