Event was shot on elentronic targets, so once you start you can not go back to sighters, and no wind flags in windy and rainy conditions. Those scores are very good considering.

The 10-ring on the electronic targets is 10mm across (standard TRA target size).

We have flags at 10 and 40(?) metres, which are the typical strips of cloth. When they get wet, they get heavy and unresponsive, so when they're horizontal, there's a lot of wind out there!

The course of fire is an unlimited number of shots, you press the "Match" button, and then 60 shots for score. Once you press the "Match" button, you can't go back to sighters.

The contest started with minimal breeze, but driving rain. I got the first 14 or so scoring shots in, then had to wait about 7 minutes or so, as the rain stopped, and the wind kicked in. When my clock got down to 1 shot per minute, I decided I had to keep shooting, and so dropped a 9, learnt the holdoff from it, and then began scoring 10's again. My other dropper was a wind shot when the breeze finally decided to moderate.

There were guys on the day that dropped two shots and decided to give up, and shoot the rest of the shots out. Given I dropped two, the lesson should be to never give up, especially in the trying and difficult conditions. If the day was still, sunny, and bright, it would have been a different story.

When I stopped shooting, I fully expected that I'd come about 5th or 6th, given the caliber of the shooters, but when I looked up at my mum, and she'd raised her finger to say I'd scored 1st place, well... Bill C confirmed it a moment later.

I'm slowly becoming a heavy weather shooter... First the North Rocks shoot, then the Northern Beaches shoot, and now the State Champs - all shot in crap weather! And who keeps saying that Lapua shoots crap in the breeze (compared to Eley)?

When I dropped the two shots I couldn't be bothered, in fact I rattled off the remaining shots in record time, in fact, if I recall correctly I was the first to finish.

To be completely honest, I am quiet over shooting, it's the same people who set the range up, the same people who change targets and always the same people who shoot two details.

This year to date my rifle has not been performing as it should and following the event I pulled it down and identified that the front mount had come loose.

My rifle was not capable of performing to its standard.

I have since replaced the mounts with a new set of Luepold's and clamped on the ol Wally Siebert with the spiders web crosshair, I still have a few issues regarding elevation and hopefully I can resolve this on Saturday.

What is most interesting is having spoken with Bill & Dal and Bill stating that he is sourcing a 'factory' barrel for a custom build and Dal stating that on one of his Fienwerkbaus that the tuner makes absolutely no difference.

So much for 'Custom barrels and tuners'.

Yes, congratulations Bec, it was a convincing and easy win. On my behalf, I really didn't want to be there, I don't really have the time to keep the rifle in tune these days and decided to use the time to just have fun.

Bec, rather then piss and moan to Leanne about what I had done, muster the courage next time and say it to my face.

What I should have done is not fired a shot.

Brett, as for your snide comment in regard to coming last, mate, 'water off a Ducks back' and it's competitors like you with your holier then thou and pompous attitude that turns people away from competing-evidently it is testament of a bad sport.

I didn't know you had a problem with your rifle, you didn't tell me that you did.

When I saw that you, Peter, John Howard, Joy, Ron, Ivan Kelly, Bill and Dal were shooting, I knew I'd be in for some very stiff competition. So when you'd dropped a bundle of shots, I thought that you'd dropped a bunch, and went "oh well, not my day", and shot 'em out, as it's not like you to drop that many in any shoot.

On Tuesday night, I wondered where Leanne was on Sunday, so asked her, and asked whether she knew how you shot. She didn't, so I told her that you hadn't shot well. I love the friendly competition. Your 4000 points in the club Benchrest comp is the challenge for me for this year.

Rib me all you like, mate, as I enjoy the laughs - get enough rolled eyes and remarks when I drop points in the sunday shoot, have a laugh, and continue on with the next detail.

I certainly hope that your comments re the setting up/taking down targets etc weren't aimed squarely at me. I live out near Penrith, get home from work, jump in the car, drive out to St Marys, pick up my rifle, and drive to the range @ Sutherland. It takes me 55 minutes to get to Sutho from St Marys, so by the time I get there, it's 7pm, and you guys are already up on the mound doing the targets. I usually do the flags.

I usually take them down too, as there are 6 guys up there taking the flags down - I'm only going to get in the way, so I do the flags, the lights, and put the benches up.

What more can I do?

So keep shooting, fix that rifle of yours, and come join me in the prone shoots, and laugh at me when I get the shits royally when I can't beat ya!

That would be the broken down & well worn equipment (read perfect condition scope) you bought at an overly inflated price off me ... wouldn't it ... I would have thought you would have got rid of it, being so broken down and well worn.

But then again its probably the best scope you will ever own and for less than the price of a second hand Weaver T36 as I recall.

Mate you haven't gotten over that bout of footrot have you? I would say that by your result, whether it be gun or mind related, it could be time to move on to centerfire BR. You should come on up to sunny North Queensland and shoot at the really really big 10 ring, seven inches in diameter, way bigger that that microscopic dot that rimfire shooters tinker with. Only catch is that it is another 950 yards further down the track than that rimfire stuff. Sounds like you need a holiday or a new hobby

I could take time and liberty to reply to all but I won't.

Over the last 3 months my rifle has not been performing to standard, is it an excuse...?

Absolutely.

However, it is completely related to time and working shift work-unfortunately I am required to work an irregular roster-meaning that I can work 3 different shifts in a 4 day period. It really does wonders for a persons recreational activities. I generally wake up feeling mentally and physically fukced. For those that do work shift work I am adamant that they would know what I am talking about.

The added work commitments that I now have including Study, a couple of submissions to Government that are in process and a vehicle in the garage that is being prepared for respray, I simply have too many pots on the burn and it is seriously impacting upon my ability to 'focus' on the task at hand. At the moment shooting is my last priority.

I don't even have time to clean my other rifles let alone shoot them.

On Saturday I could have smashed the rifle over the bench- in absolute frustration I cycled 60 rounds in record time with little care or concern.

I am also giving up the booze. Booze, shift work, a bad diet with extra commitments is a recipe for disaster, I have since incorporated blending and juicing fruit as part of my dietary intake (this has all manifested from Saturdays meltdown). A week later with absolutely no booze and with fruit in my system (including Blue Berries-anti-oxidants) I am beginning to feel better-in fact I have no desire for alcohol and now crave juiced fruit.

Previously, I have been changing rosters to accomodate shooting on a Tuesday night, however, I am required to work directly following a shoot starting at midnight or following an early start on day shift (I get up at 0315 hrs to leave and start work at 0500). It certainly takes it toll and it has gotten to stage where I am completely over it and will no doubt no longer shoot Tuesday nights in Club. This is one thing that makes Fly shooting so attractive in that they are not every week let alone every month and one can either have fun or be competitive-no one bothers let alone has an expectation nor have I ever really heard anyone of reputable ability condemn others that participate.

As one said, I may need find another hobby or take up 6mmBR. They are certainly options as is F Class, as they say a change is as good as a holiday and I know that I am certainly not getting back home to Queensland for Christmas.

Rinso, I know that you have misgivings about having sold that scope, it is certainly a beautiful scope, in fact one of the clearest that I own. If you are willing to pay me what I paid you then it is yours.

As for shooting small bore I will certainly re-assess my circumstances when time permits.

Realistically Saturday was a blessing in disguise and perhaps a wake up call to slow down.

Sour Grapes....? I certainly have none. Can they too be blended...
