wrong scope?

Nikon Monarch 8-32 x 50.

Got Shane to fit it to the VLP I am trying to run as a dual purpose club shoot/varmint rifle.

He used mounts that should give me the elevation to 500m but I run out of elevation trying to get it on at 100m!

Just sat the scoped rifle on the table in the rest and watched through the scope as I wound it up and down.

Nothing wrong, reticle goes up and down but not many clicks needed before it gets to the ends of its elevation range.

So, on to the web, look up specs.

Internal elevation range 20 MOA.

It just isnt enough to wind up and down from 100m to hunt with to 500m or 1000yds is it?

Got to be something wrong in the mounts (something backwards maybe?)

20moa up & 20moa down or total adjustment of 20moa?

You will find as you step up in quality within a scope brand as well as improved glass you also get an increase in adjustment.

The sightrons range from 40moa in the lower spec to 80moa in the higher with the same magnification scopes.

How much elevation in the mounts? 20-30moa and you will have exactly your problem with a scope with limited adjustment.

Hi Trevort , when you tried to sight it in was it on 32pwr ? When you started were the adjustments half way all round in windage and elevation ? I purchased a scope and tried to sight it in for 22lr benchrest at 50 mtrs and ran out of elevation also. My 1st thoughts was scope was buggered, but it was explained to me that you should make sure the turrets are at half way allround and that the magnification should be at its lowest setting. I then followed these instructions and after looking through the bore and fired a few shots i was on paper and had heaps of windage and elevation. Just my 2cents i hope you work it out. Cheers Ron

Cheers Ron. Pretty sure its just that 20 MOA elevation is just not enough to be a dual purpose target varmint scope from 100m to 1000yds!

20 minutes of elevation is not enough to go from 100 to 1,000 yards, it would do 100 to500 metres though.

Why not add a 20 Moa (or even 40) canted base, that should see you to from 100-1000m?

That's the problem with the limited adjustment in the scope he cant get to POA at 100 a 40Moa base would just make the problem worse at 100m

I, like rath misread the post and thought the problem was moving the point of impact "up" to zero rather than getting it down to a 100 yard zero. What MOA are the rail/mounts?

A 40 MOA base will not get you on paper at 100 (Mal and I recently experienced the same problems on a recent build). The rifle a dedicated LR rifle chambered in 308 is still 12 inches high at 200 and using a Nightforce BR scope.

You will probably find that 20 MOA is ample.

Although I would suggest using a columnator to see just where you are in terms of adjustment and looking carefully at the rings that you have sourced. I would be inclined to believe that it is a problem with rings and bases, you may be able to correct this with a shim turned out from an Aluminium Can and Loctite.

Out of curiosity what make of scope and rings..?

Regards

Sean

Trevor,

You've done the right thing by deciding to get another scope. Even with the flattest shooting calibres in common use, 100yd to 1000yd in 20 minutes is impossible e.g. a 7mm 180gn Berger at MV of 3000fps drops about 25 MOA between those two ranges. A .308 (is this what you have?) with 155gn Dyer HBC at 3000 fps drops 31 MOA. My advice would be to get something with at least 40 MOA elevation adjustment. Otherwise you'll lose a good part of your windage adjustment at the upper and lower elevation extremes. There are some options if you do want to use the Bushnell, but they have down sides - if it has a reticule with vertical tick marks (e.g. mil dots), you can use these instead of the centre of the reticule at the extremes. Or you could have some sort of elevation-adjustable base made (I have seen them). Or maybe Burris Signature adjustable rings could help. But a different scope would be a technically better option. Generally, the 30mm (and above) tube models are more likely to have the most adjustment, and lower magnification scopes will also have more.

Good luck.

Alan
