my 2 cents.....

i'm new to the sport and shoot fullbore. started about september 07. i managed to pick up a 2nd,3rd or even maybe 4th hand omark. i paid around $550 with near new maddco barrel(400 rounds) including sights and rings. my best shoot to date was 102.7 at 500yds. (yes i did do a little dance when i got off the mound :D :D ).

while i understand fullbore is maybe not as exacting as f class or BR, my thoughts were (along with my limited budget [wife + 2 teenage girls that bleed me dry  ]) that it was better to learn how to shoot first before spending alot of money IMO.

just my 2 cents......

:)

groo, umm scuse my ignorance but 102.7, I thought maximum was 100.20?

It is a great option though, I've considered it as well for F-Standard, still considering it.

We shoot 21 to count, so possible is 105.21

It allows 3 ranges to be shot in one afternoon, ie, 3/5/600yds, 7 to count at each range.

Hope that makes sense,

yeah sorry Klicker......

i shoot as part of the MDRA at Belmont and we shoot 2 rounds at the same distance 300 - 1000yrds(10 + 11) for a possible 105.21

what some of the top shooters score is really amazing considering they only use 'peep sights' and in the prone unsupported position

well mate I think shooting a 102.7 is pretty damn good, I'd be dancing too.

shooting "unrested" over those ranges and the scores they put together are crazy

While this topic is still going, anyone want to recommend me a scope/scope rings for under $1500. Ive been looking at Nightforce scopes but are they really worth the extra money?, What makes them better than say Leupold?

Cirus,

It's fair to say that NF are the favourite scope of Australian F-Class shooters, and from what I read on international forums, all F-Class shooters. The concensus is that they have the edge on all-round reliability and capability over anything worth less money. But don't expect perfection by any means - they have their problems. With scopes you get what you pay for - you will hear this a lot, probably because its true. If you want to pay a little less than a NF, there are many good options including Leupold, Weaver, Lynx. There is a new Bushnell coming out shortly, which pretty well matches the NF at a much lower price - if it is reliable, it might capture a good share of the market. If you decide to fork out for a NF, you may have a long wait for delivery unless you're not too fussy about the model and reticule. The Australian delivery of NF is woeful at the present time. If you want one quickly, you could consider ordering direct from the US, but with GST and customs duty, it may be expensive.

It's also fair to say that opinions about the best scope are like a___holes - everyone has one :D :D !

Cirus,
NF are not expensive . have a look at the new release Smidt & Bender (12-50x50) or a March (10-60x50) Now thaye are expensive but as Alan said you get what you pay for.

The Leupold does not compare with the nightforce, not even on the same planet. Whats more Leupold just is not what it used to be, many US shooters are changing from Leupold to Weaver for a range of reasons not least beng clarity of lens.

Best advice with scopes is buy once, cry once. Ohh and don't skimp on mounts either, its stupid to put good glass in a cheap holder.

cheers

I ended up buying the savage FTR which has been sitting in the shop for a couple of weeks waiting for me to finish getting my gun license. Should only be about a week more now hopefully though :D. I also ordered a Nightforce but im not sure whats happening with that..... i think hes having problems with the supplier getting some as someone suggested above. Its been a long wait but im trying not to be too impatient :P

I don't know if you're locked in to that but Pro-Cal Trading has some 8-32BR with NPR2 reticle in stock (when I spoke to him Saturday).

AlanF i got my Nightforce 8-32x56 Benchrest in NP-2DD on friday and it looks good thanks anyway :D.

Klicker yeah its in 308. Mine was apparently the first one the store owner had come through his shop before, and he managed to sell another one within in a few days. The guy who bought it went for his license about 1-2 weeks after i did, but has got his license already :(. He said it shot "well", sooooo i cant wait to get out and try mine myself :P.
