Re: been to the range.
I guess that I'm lucky that the Bathurst range is a bastard for wind so it's given me pretty good education kick start at reading the wind. Well dropped the old girl off last night to get fixed and sort some other problems out, get her back on Saturday.

Re: been to the range.
Tackleberry- get onto Erik Cortinas method of tuning at 100yds on accurateshooter. If your final load has that ES I would expect the rifle to be compeititive. However 3 shots is a very weak indication of ES. 10-15 shots and repeated a few times is a much better sample. FWIW I actually dont place much weight on ES, but obviously anything over 20 or so might be starting to cause issues at long range.
Re: been to the range.
Guys,
Don't understand why you place so much emphasis on ES. If you haven't sorted your bullets for AOL, bearing length, weight, ogive uniformity and about 6 other parameters, ES is pointless. Reason being that anything, and I mean anything, that changes the BC of the bullet, but just a little, makes a low ES just a number. I don't own a chrony, and haven't put a round over one for at least 4 years. Didn't stop me winning 3 Southern Cross Champs on the trot however.
Rinso put up a post regarding bullet sorting in the projectile uniformity post in the ammo section, it's worth considering, so is JR's post in the archives.
For ES to work, it starts with case sorting, then a really good set of scales, then hours of pedantic, anal work with measuring devices, no wonder my wife tells me LRBR is for people with ASD.

Re: been to the range.
Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance hey Jeff.
People seem to loose sight of a couple of basic principles IMHO ie
Its all about repeatability .. be it BR long or short range or F Open or any other discipline.
10% of fisherman catch 90% of fish ... because prepare and practice same applies to shooters natural ability only gets you so far.
By far the biggest thing is commitment to your goal wether that's to beat the field or to simply beat your previous personal best but you must enjoy the race.
As Jeff rightly points out no single thing will get you great results its about getting all the details right and then hoping the gods smile on match day

Re: been to the range.
did all right today, hot as hell on the mound.
did targets first up and it got damn hot by the time i got to shoot.
500yrds.Target Rifle,C grade.
variable wind, strong right left, then nothing then mild left right...basically all over the shop.
dialled in the basic clicks for the distance in elevation.
dropped a couple of minutes on right wind [then backed off]
the only TR shooter on the day,so i won my class and grade.
also shot a PB for all ranges.
97.4
to say i am happy is putting it mildly.
it just seemed so easy today,i dunno why.but i wont argue with it.

G'day Sean,
Whats the go with 11 counting shots in the second detail?
Looks like the wind was a bugger though mate.

im not exactly sure mick, its just the way its done.
i havent really questioned it......might have to...
some of those 4's were from me getting a wobble up just when i went to fire.

Re: been to the range.
G'day Sean, bloody good hit there I didn't shoot this week had to make dog box's. Bit strange about the 11 scores in the second detail by the look of your first two sighter's you didn't need an optional
I hear it was pretty tough in town this weekend. If I am lucky I might get to the Lithgow OPM next Sunday but I forgot about a birthday party in Yass on Saturday

Re: been to the range.
Re the 11shots,this is only a guess,in past years, long before I set foot on a full bore range, they shot seven round stages,a three stage possible was 105.Maybe the 11 shot and a ten shot stage was too keep the scores in line with past practice, but with only two stages on the mound.

Thats a pretty reasonable explanation, any idea roughly what era that was?Flash Gordon wrote:Re the 11shots,this is only a guess,in past years, long before I set foot on a full bore range, they shot seven round stages,a three stage possible was 105.Maybe the 11 shot and a ten shot stage was too keep the scores in line with past practice, but with only two stages on the mound.

Re: been to the range.
Yeah for me birthday party in Yass is the week after. Let's see how I go at my second open shoot. Never herd of 7 shot stages but I'm new to this game so will leave this discussion to the older blokes.

Re: been to the range.
Spoke to a shooter about the same age as me,today,he has been shooting Target Rifle since he was a teenage trainee, his version was that seven shot stages were common, usually 3,5 and 6 hundred yards at DRA and club OPM's,Queen's had seven shots at the shorter ranges and ten at the longer ranges. Was still going into the Omark times.Seems to have died out in most states, but he says it is still a QLD thing, claims that is used in club shoots in QLD.Not seven shot matches, but the ten and eleven,to wind up with a total of 105 points.

Re: been to the range.
Had a tuning session at 900yds today, was great to shoot on manual targets for a change too as we mostly use kongsberg electronic targets. Found a load and finally have all my barrels tuned to start 2016. Good feeling.

Re: been to the range.
I went to the Lithgow prize shoot yesterday, hmmm wish I'd stayed home, came dead last had a shocker on the first 500 couldn't find the centre of the target just kept hitting either side of the 6 ring. Bloody tricky range Lithgow it looks like it's an easy range as it's up a valley, but it is just so twitchy, and as the shoot progressed the mirage came up as well. Missed too mirage changes which resulted in 2 4's in the 600 yard stage was beaten down to last by another 1st year by just two x's. Oh well different ranges are hard to get used to.
