Hate to say it but the guys shooting f class up here Geoff Willis for one is very help full has lent me gear and willing to coach on how to read wind etc. You are 'correct the target boys are a bit more closed up but even then there's those who help. So what did you shoot f class or target

Shot TR many years ago and some F class not that many years ago. I remember Geoff he is a good bloke and a good shooter and the TR boys are what they are .... how many members now 20 or less.
You seem to miss the point, Geoff can show you a little but Fly is a harder game by nature than F class. Keep in mind its a score group match not just a score match, as such you need a good group score with a good target score to be competitive which adds to the degree of difficulty.
Flag watching at a Fly match is very different to an F Class match. No just a few range flags here but many different and varied flags which are far more accurate at showing conditions than range flags.
If you go to a Fly shoot you will see what I am getting at ie Canberra in March/April will be 50-70 shooters including the bulk of the best going around in LR BR all in one place, Batemans and Wagga will have a smaller fields but will still include a lot of top class shooters. You see because there are only a certain number of registered matches they are all more like a Queens in NRAA circles as far as attendance and standard go.
Trust me you wont find a more helpful or giving group of shooters anywhere. these guys grow the sport by encouraging and including newcomers.

Fair enough used to work with Dale Quant up in Brisbane who runs a few fly shoots. All I was getting at is he can get some more practice at the long range shooting when you can shoot every weekend. Have wondered about a fly shooting but never had a rifle accurate enough nor for that matter able to go to a shoot:-)

Heading to the range tomorrow as I have some some to test in the .243 and 30/06, happens to be their regular fly shoot date so I'll throw the 5.6x57 in see if I can have a crack. Got nothing to lose and I'll never wear this thing out if I don't shoot it, should be good for a bit of fun if nothing else :D

Bloody hell 300m is a damn long way and those flies are friggin small

It was a bit of fun came home with a score of 70 something (3rd in my rifle class apparently, didn;t ask out of how many) and learn't a couple of things I guess, the main one being I really need to tidy up my technique :o

Got a bit to do thisarvo so I;ll grab some target pics later on this arvo/tonight and throw a few up for giggles.

Yes, the 5.6 and I have both made our rifle shooting competition debut

Well, the fly was a bit of fun and good experience. Lobbed at the range before shooting had commenced but just had enough time to pay some money and get a practice target out at the 300m mound. Yep, no girly practice shots at 100 straight to 300 with a rifle I hadn't fired in quite some time.

Here's the practice target:

Gotta admit I was pretty relieved to at least be on paper  I had a quick google before I left and according to some ballistic programe at 300m with a 200 yard zero I should have been about 5.7 inches low, so initially I aimed up the target a bit and hoped for the best  First shot was dead on straight below the target then I started adjusting a bit and got all over the place but the thing seemed to climb up the target a bit by itself. There was a little right to left breeze to contend with.

OK, shit got serious so the comp targets got put out. 5 shot round (not sure if that's what it's called) but anyway I went a little early hence the big red dot to the left, oops. I managed to get all 5 on the scoring zone so was pretty happy. Made the mistake of actually trying to compensate and chase the fly ooops when in reality I should have just held where I reckoned and tried to pull off a good shot

2nd and final target and I kinda was getting a little more familiar but still wasted some time chasing the fly  Pretty sure it was the last two shots that were the closest?

Conclusion, I probably should do this again. Probably wouldn't hurt to test a series of rounds over the chrono and see what variation I am getting velocity wise and yeh that distance does highlight little inadequacies in ones technique

Anyway, glad I had a crack and will probably have another attempt another day 8)

Waldo

where did you shoot that Waldo Majura ???? I shot the Omark at 500 on Sunday at Katoomba in F class, worked out why I'm having trouble with extraction, the extractor is bent so need a new one. Didn't shoot well. :( :( Just couldn't get my head right with all the hassle's. That said good shooting non the less, it gets a bit obsessive and addictive. :D :D

This was at the Wodonga SSAA.

300m (and I'm sure 500 is a significant amount worse) really does magnify any errors in what you are doing. Pretty happy to get all the shots in the scoring zone but certainly not in a hurry to fart arse around with new loads or gear that's for sure. There's heaps more behind the butt to fine tune than what is in front of it

Hey Waldo well done, you went and had a go and are talking about the next trip :) ,I will also say that none of this comp/fly shooting will hurt you when shooting in the field at a later date either.

Hell reading the wind makes a big difference, I am still trying to figure that one out when it's up and down. It's easy enough when the wind is constant harder when it's not.

Well looking at your targets the load is not terrible, vertical is reasonable it was simple wind doping that hurt you. I suggest you pay more attention to the flags when shooting. Hopefully you are shooting with both eyes open, if not start, it lets you see the wind as you shoot.
Well done anyway
