Thanks Kenny, I'll do that too. It is also going to be doing varmint duties on a farm so I have to keep the moisture off the wood.

Dave your best way for a clear once you have all the sanding prep is to use a good floor finish.

Paint on about 5-6 coats to seal it and fill the pores and then sand it lightly to give a neat smooth finish but only enough to remove any marks etc.

Then spray on coats until you are happy with the finish.
cheers,

Thanks Shane. Would an oil floor finish do the job and then a clear coat over that be ok?

Of all the oil floor finishes i have seen none would fill the pores. So i would use only a poly style clear.

Dave,

You could try staining before coating as well, a bit of walnut stain over a nicely sanded bit of ply looks real nice in the flesh, gives the appearance of 'depth' to the grain....hard to tell in the pic but anyway....mine is in this link

http://ausvarmint.kjd84.com/forum/viewt ... highlight=

You can also stain in colours if you want....like a blue or red see through finish  by simply adding paint tinter to the clear :D I did an ebony sample peice once, the dark grain went black and the lighter stuff went a dark grey...it looked OK

AI,

The stock is an old 'speedy' pattern......I brought it off Peter....jeez maybe 7 years ago :D

Yep will be at the Bay Saturday arvo, I hope to get there early enough to drop in. I am shooting the 6.5 and the 30BR in both classes on the Sunday......will see you there. I reckon we should get Rinso well and truly pissed on Saturday night so he has a handicap on Sunday

G'day rinso,
seems to me you need to be swabbed and tested for drugs in sport! Beware the snap of the rubber gloves being put on!

Speedy design hey... I am thinking of a ProCal in speedy's BRX design for the Lawton...

I plan on getting to the BAY around 1-2pm-ish tomorrow... Got to get my Annie ready for the Rimfire Fly!

Took it out Wednesday... horrible day.. Just need to see if the RWS stuff I have goes alright.. not to mention getting in on paper yet!

Shooting two classes.. arn't you going to be busy!

I hate packing for these shoots.... there is always that "have I forgotten anything".

Rifles, bolts, ammo....... rest and bags......

See you soon guys.. and... ps..... no knee capping "Tonya Harding"!!!That was her name right.. how long ago was that!

Geez Ned,

You win a match or two at 500 and 1000 and all of a sudden your the target ... Maybe I should tell them my secret to reading the wind ... keep your shut ..

Looks like the weathers going to be a bit iffy .. rain and high wind forecast .. should keep it interesting.

Might have to retire before they get to serious. My youngest is coming down to shoot, maybe they will be watching the wrong bloke, his eyes are still good

cheers
